PAYMENT ON PUBLIC WORKS
FOR KING’S BIRTHDAY HOLIDAY The King’s Birthday observance day is to be a holiday on defence and other construction works that are being carried out by the Public Works Department. This is announced in a memorandum issued by the Undersecretary of the Public Works Department (Mr W. L. Newnham). which sets out the rates of pay for the holiordinary public works, departmental workmen with at least four weeks’ continuous service are to be paid for the holiday provided they comply with the conditions of the holiday and annual leave pamphlet relating to payment for statutory holidays. Those with less than four weeks’ service are to be paid their minimurti weekly wage for the working week m which' the holiday occurs provided they have otherwise qualified for it or their earnings for time worked during that working week, whichever is the larger sum. . The same conditions will be observed for men on defence construction works. Those with four weeks’ service are to be paid for the holiday, the time being eight and three-quar-ter hours. Those with less than four weeks’ service are to be paid the minimum weekly wage of £5 10s for the working week in which the holiday occurs or their earnings for time worked during the week, whichever is the larger sum. Contractors’ workmen who are entitled to payment for the hdiday under their awards are to be paid for 8J hours, but those who are not entitled to holiday pay are to be paid the minimum weekly wage of £5 10s or their earnings for time worked during the working week. All payments by contractors in respect of holiday pay will be at their expense.
