Believed to have been shot down - by a German aeroplane, a British p Overseas Airways Douglas air liner u was lost on its way from Lisbon to e Foynes. The passengers included the s famous British actor, Mr Leslie Hows ard. The British Overseas Airways Corporation. in a statement, said: “The corporation regrets to announce that a civil aircraft, en route from Lisbon to the United Kingdom, and carrying 13 passengers and a crew of four, is overdue and must be presumed lost. The last message from the aircraft stated that it was Doing attacked by enemy aircraft.” Messages from Lisbon say that it was learned that the aircraft was shot ■ down over the Bay of Biscay. Among > the passengers were three small Bri- ‘ tish children. j The Douglas left Lisbon at 9 a.m. 1 yesterday and the last communication '• was received from the aeroplane at 11 a.m. , Mr Howard arrived in Lisbon on J May 27. He was on a lecturing tour I under the auspices of the British , Council. He had postponed his return . to England to be present at the pre- . miere of his film. “The First of the Few.” in which he played the part - of Mr R. J. Mitchell, the designer of . the Spitfire.
