The Hon. E. T. Tirikatene, member of the Executive Council representing the native race, last evening took the place in the Ministerial benches of the House of Representatives which had been occupied by the Hon. P. K. Paikea. Mr Tirikatene was formerly on the cross benches on the Opposition side of the House and occupied his old seat on Wednesday.—From Our Parliamentary Reporter. The Minister of National Service (the Hon. A. McLagan) arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Wellington. The Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft will preside over the adjourned session of the Supreme Court in Invercargill, which- will begin next Tuesday. The Rt. Hon, J. G. Coates was described as “one of the most capable public men New Zealand has ever known” at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce will be represented at the conference to be held on the tunnel road proposal by Messrs V. E. Hamilton and G. H. Wood. The Dominion Chief Commissioner for Boy Scouts, Mr Hector Christie, will leave Wanganui to-day to attend a conference of commissioners and scoutmasters of the South Island in Dunedin next week-end, In addition to attending the conference, Mr Christie will visit the main centres in Otago, Southland, and Canterbury. He will return to Wanganui in about a week’s time.
