ARMED FORCES APPEALS
DECISIONS OF NO. 1 BOARD A sine die adjournment was the decision given by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board on an appeal for a grade 1 school teacher, heard by' the board yesterday. The appellant was Clifford Cross, senior science master at the Christchurch Technical College. Cross was a married man with no children. Dr. D. E. Hansen, principal of the college, said that Cross's work was of national importance, and that scientists were urgently needed at this time. In announcing the board’s decision, the chairman, Mr E. A. Lee, said that efforts were to be made to secure a man to fill Cross's position, so that he could oe released. Appearing for Henry William Smith, a grade 1 man, whom he termed a "permanent casual” worker for the Ellesmere Drainage Board, Mr L, F. Foote, secretary of the board, emphasised the importance of this man’s work. Smith, who was employed by the board whenever he was not required for farm work, was a ditch-cleaner. "We are six weeks behind with this work," said Mr Foote. Mr G. M. Hall, a member of the board, asked what it would mean to the district if the upkeep of the drains was neglected for a year. "Twenty-five per cent, of the farmers in the district would be out of production," said Mr Foote. Decision in this case was reserved. Decisions announced by the board yesterday were as follows; —Aubrey Francis Arthur Henshall (1). jeweller (Director of National Service), adjourned sine die; Alan Robinson Greer (1), mill hand (P. W. Greer), adjourned for review in three months; Raymond Henry Blackmore (1), flourmiller (Model Flour Milling Company), reserved: Basil Oxford Turpin, farm hand (A. E. B. Goodwin and G. Steele), and Edward Hugh Duggan (1), farm hand (G. Steele), adjourned sine die; George Steele (temporarily unfit), farmer (appellant), appeal withdrawn, appellant not to be called before July 31; Harold Novis (1), orchard hand (J. Novls), adjourned for two months; Jack Barrett (1), farmer (appellant), adjourned sine die; Charles Leonard Dickson (H.G), transferred to E.P.S.; William Clarkson Scott (temporarily unfit), bank officer (National Bank of New Zealand), adjourned sine die; Arnold Frank Wlsker (temporarily unfit), cabinetmaker (A. J. White, Ltd., adjourned sine die; Robert Cleland (1), farmer (appellant), mobilisation deferred to July 31; Walter Samuel Kinley (1), discmaker (Director of National Service), dismissed, appellant not to be called before August 31; Robert Alexander Thompson (1), coppersmith (Oakleys, Ltd.), adjourned for review: George William Timms (3), farm manager (trustee Estate A. L. Craigie), adjourned sine die; Edward George Adolphus Mason (1), farm hand (C. E. Mason), dismissed: William John Burton Balliday (H.G.). adjourned sine die; James Stuart Taylor Tolerton (1), farmer (appellant), adjourned sine die: Leslie Huia Turton (H.G.), transferred to E.P.S.; Clifford Cross (1), teacher (Christchurch Technical College), adjourned sine die; Vivian Alfred Austin (2). tool and die maker (Empire Rubber Mills), adjourned sine die. In the report of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday it was said that C. A. Hussey, a market gardener. was farming 15 acres at Harewood. This should have read 58 acres.
