NEW POTATOES
1 MAXIMUM PRICES FIXED NORTH ISLAND AND NELSON From Our Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, June 2. The schedule of prices for early crop potatoes grown in the North Island and the provincial district of Nelson to November 30 was announced to-day by the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. J. G. Barclay). He said that the prices for new potatoes grown in the South Island other than Nelson for the same period, and for potatoes delivered after November 30, were receiving consideration. Following are the maximum prices for new potatoes, free on rail, grower's station, sacks in;—To September 30, £42 10s; October 1 to October 15, £35; October 16 to October 31, £3O; November 1 to November 15, £25; November 16 to November 30, £2O. “These prices,” said the Minister, “will be incorporated in a price order in due course, but in the meantime it is only fair that growers should know immediately of the decision to set prices which are to be the maximum prices operating for new potatoes until the end of November. An announcement of South Island prices will be made as soon as a decision has been reached. “I wish to emphasise that the prices announced are ceiling prices only and have been agreed to by representatives of the growers from the two main producing areas. The actual prices to be paid to growers will adjust themselves to a level, according to supply and demand, not exceeding these figures. Growers will be free to make their own marketing arrangements during the currency of these prices.”
