School Leaving Age _ “The announcement of proposaliTfor raising the school leaving age is welcomed by the New Zealand-Manulac- r turers’ Federation and by manufacturers generally,” said Mr D. I. Macdonald, secretary of the federation, after a discussion at a meeting of the federation’s council in Wellington last week. In the council’s opinion, the higher leaving age should be at least 15 years. In the move, it was felt, there was a distinct benefit to be gained by the community as a whole in giving the youth of the country a better education. It would have farreaching effects for the good of all. For the young people themselves it would be beneficial in the effect it would have , upon their character, and there was also the valuable purpose it would serve in having the children placed under stricter control for a longer period. The federation endorsed the proposal wholeheartedly. Votes for Subdivisions The number of votes allotted to land subdivisions for representation on the Ellesmere Land Drainage Board were announced at the meeting of the board held yesterday, the secretary, Mr L. F. Foote, having been asked to make a report following a discussion at a previous meeting.
