SHORTHORN BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING HELD The year for Shorthorn breeders had been a very satisfactory one, said Mr F. G. Herridge in presenting the annual report of the Canterbury branch of the Milking Shorthorn Association at its annual meeting held yesterday. Prices had been very good and Shorthorns had shown that they could hold their own with any other breed of cattle. The committee set up to deal with the annual bull fair said it was well satisfied with its first venture and it was for the executive to say whether it should be carried on. There were 83 bulls entered and only three had not been sold. For a first effort it was very good and with the support of breeders would grow in importance. Messrs G. H. B. Lill and C. Bowis were appointed to represent the association at the annual conference of Shorthorn breeders to be held at Palmerston North next Wednesday, and Messrs S. Smith, J. W. Graham, and C. Bowis were elected representatives to the Dairy Breeders’ Association. Mr J. Peach was elected president and Mr G. H. B. Lill, vice-president. Damming the Zambesi.—A scheme for building a dam across the Zambesi river which “would make the Colorado look like a fish-pond,” for a hydro-electric plant to provide cheap power over a large area, is among the post-War development plans being investigated by the Southern Rhodesian Government. —Rugby. June 1.
