SPORT IN THE SCHOOLS
MORE PUBLICITY WANTED COUNCIL OF AMATEUR SPORT “We, as a body, want more space given in the newspapers. to games suitable lor young children," said Mr E. V. Phillips, chairman of the Canterbury Council of Amateur Sport, at a meeting of the council held last evening. Mr Phillips was commenting on the views of Mr A. R. Blank, a delegate to the council, who said that he considered ‘‘there was far too much space given in the newspapers to racing.” Mr Blank also said that he would like to see more people playing sport, and not just watching. He said he had onqe had a pamphlet printed and distributed among spectators at a Rugby match, asking these people why they were not playing a sport, instead of watching. ‘‘l was threatened with prosecution for this,” he said. "I wish I had been, and I would have been able to give my views more prominence.” A suggestion from the Auckland Council of Sport that a national council should be formed was considered by the meeting. It was decided to wait until the return from Wellington of the Canterbury council’s representative, who would meet the representative of the Auckland council. It could then be decided whether the council should appoint a delegate to the proposed Dominion meeting of spor{s councils. The projected Journal of Sport to be circulated among primary school children was also discussed. Five con, tributions have already been received, and eight more are expected. It is hoped that the journal, which will be edited by Mr Blank, will be published quarterly.
