MINOR FIRES
In the early hours of yesterday morning the Christchurch Central Fire Brigade received a call to a house occupied by Mr James Hannan at 147 Holly road, St. Albans, where fire had broken out in a mattress. Little damage was done to property before the outbreak was suppressed. The brigade received a‘ call to a chimney fire at 143 Ferry road, Woolston, at 6.6 p.m. on Monday. The house is occupied by Mr J. Sullivan. New Zealand Racing. Whippet Club— A satisfactory balance-sheet was presented at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Whippet Club, and the president (Mr E. Musson) reported that In spite of many difficulties, the dub had experienced a successful season. Officers elected for the ensuing year were:—Patron. Mr C. Stafford; president, Mr R. Knox: vice-president, Mr M. Daly; secretary, Mr W, Linton; judges, Messrs Mouldy, Cogle, Aninltch; track marshals, Messrs G. Voice and F. Ockwell; stewards, Messrs R. Knox. M. Daly and W. Linton: starters, Messrs W. McFarlane, J. Fox, and D. Russell; Identification committee, Messrs G. Hurrell, J. Fox. and G. Voice; veterinary officer, Mr Rnmsav; committee, Messrs R. Knox, M. Daly. W. Linton, G. Hurrell, C. Russell. C. Lament, W. Miller, and F. Ockwell. Whangarei Appeal.—As a result of a campaign to raise the Whangarei and district contribution to the Patriotic Fund £10,671 . was subscribed. The campaign had been waged enthusiastically from the outset five months ago.—(P.A.) Pigeon Show.—The judging of a further two classes in the Canterbury Pigeon Flying Club’s series of winter shows resulted as follows:—Adult hens, flown 500 miles, J. H. Beale 1, E. Grimes 2, L.
