GALLANTRY IN THE AIR
AWARD OF DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 1. For skill and gallantry in the air. Pilot Officer Francis Murphy has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, according to official advice received by the Air Department, The citation states: “Pilot Officer Murphy has shown himself to be a skilful pilot. He has taken part in many determined attacks on enemy shipping, and has destroyed four enemy aircraft in air combat. His successes have been worthily earned.” Born in England in 1917, Pilot Officer Murphy came to New Zealand at the age of five. He was educated at the Lyall Bay School and Rongotai College. Wellington. He was a clerk in the Land and Income Tax Department before entering the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1941. He was commissioned in January, 1943. His father is Mr J. Murphy, Wellington.
