TURF GOSSIP
Not Right Silver Sox suffered from soreness after the Oamaru meeting, but was considered well enough to be sent to Wingatui, and he was in keen demand in the concluding event. However, he finished near the rear of the field. He was returned home to Oamaru on Sunday, and is to be given a spell. Riding at Gllerslie A. E. Ellis will leave for Auckland to-morrow to ride at Ellerslie on Saturday, his principal mount being Evans Head in the Great Northern Hurdle Race. Another Fatality El Caballo had to be destroyed •at Wingatui on Friday. He gave a good display over a round of the country with Anglo-French, his only mistake being at a post-and-rall fence half a mile from home, which he hit heavily. When he returned it was found he had severed a tendon, and his dispatch was immediately decided upon, El Caballo, who was raced by F. J. Boyle, was a useful performer over country, and was only recently recommissioned after a lengthy spell. Encouraging Bonnie Night, third in the Trial Stakes at Wingatui, is a four-year-old mare by Night Raid from Pollyform, dam of Nightform, and is trained at Washdyke for her breeder, Mr J. Morrison. This was her third race only this term, and she may turn out useful. A Bad Falling Fair Trial was robbed of a favourable chance in the apprentices’ race at Wingatui by being restless at the barrier, and when the field was dispatched after trouble also with other horses, he was left in an almost hopeless position. He made up a good deal of ground in the middle stages, and was close up to the placed division at the post. Fair Trial is a four-year-old half-brother by Solicitor General to Wild Career, and carries the same colours. He closely resembles his relative in looks, but is built on more liberal lines. After his effort on Saturday he is certain to be In keen demand for the Southern Hack Handicap next Saturday. Lapse of Form Arctic Dawn gave a very disappointing display over the last stages of the big event at Wingatui. and was one of the first to compound turning for home. He appeared to move scratchlly In his preliminary. and is probably feeling the effects of recent racing on hard tracks. He was brought back to Riecarton after Saturday's racing and is to be put aside for a while. Never Likely Rockery had a good measure of support in the Otago Hurdles, but after his usual fault In giving away considerable ground at the start, he was never within reach of the leaders, and finished well back, Full of Promise Taxpayer, who is being raced under lease by A. McMullan, shows promise of developing into a good performer over hurdles during the present Jumping season. He gave his best display to date at Wingatui on Saturday, but was still inclined to dwell at some of his fences. Racing experience should improve him In this respect, and with Colonel Rouge out of the June Hurdles next Saturday, the speedy Gustavo gelding should again be prominent. Colonel Rouge was nominated for the race, but was apparently withdrawn before the handicaps were made, and the stable will be represented by Anglo-Irish, who. bracketed with Colonel Rouce, ran a very satisfactory race Into sixth place last week. Below Expectations Lucky Girl showed some prominence turning for home in the Brighton Handicap at Wingatui, but was soon out of the picture once the serious stages were reached. She took a good deal out of herself before the race, and will have to improve in every way to make good for her new owner, who paid a fairly big sum for her some weeks back. Cut Short Perseverance had a short career on the Turf. He was not put into training until he was 11 years of age, and in his five races up to last Saturday, he won one and was twice placed third. Perscrverance looked well at Wingatui, and carried some strong support. He appeared to be going well In a handy position rounding the home turn, where he evidentlv crossed his lees and foil heavilv Court Dress, following close behind, could not ovoid him. and fell, and M'ss Myra who was making a smart run after being slow away, crashed into t' l e nrostrate horses. K Wilson, rider of Perseverance, was the only rider to suffer from the effects of the mishap, but he Is likely to be In the saddle again next Saturday Surprising Support Prince Shad was paraded for his first onen event at Wingatui in rather big condition His usual rider, K. Wilson, was not able to take the mount, and the hurdle horseman, R. Register, was substituted, with 61b overweight Evidently this arrangement was overlooked by investors when the horses went out. as he was sent out fourth choice in a fairly strong field. Prince Shad was in last place most of the way. Late Withdrawal Platform who was looked upon as a licht-weipht possibility In the principal event at Wineatui. was withdrawn a few minutes before the rare owing to contracting lameness when being saddled up.
TROTTING NOTES
Big Fields When final payments were made for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, 12 registered two-year-olds remained in the race, and since then one horse. Lord Brooklyn, has been withdrawn. A field of 11 horses is well up to the average size of fields in this race. In the other seven events the nominations numbered 180. and though more horses than one claimed dual engagements 143 nominations were received. Even on the big
Ashburton racecourse the fields In several races are much too big to provide the best class of racing. With a margin of 108 yards separating the back-markers from the limit horses. In a field of 34 In the opening event, the handicapped Ifcrses will have a bie job in front of them and only good luck In the running at the beginning will give the logical favourite. Desmond’s Pride, a chance. In the second race, the Trial Handicap, 31 horses are eligible to start, and the back-markers are on 84 yards behind. In the Tinwald Handicap there are 23 starters out of 25 nominations, 17 In the Acton Handicap, and 18 In the Winter Handicap. For the number of nominations Ihe acceptances probably constitute a record for' the club. A Rumour For several days there has been a rumour that the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting next Monday will be held at Addington, but there is no prospect of this happening. The Ashburton track Is In first-class order, and transport arrangements have already been made for horses and spectators going to Ashburton. WANGANUI J.C. ACCEPTANCES (P.A.) WANGANUI, May 31.
