WESTPORT HOTEL DESTROYED
♦ GUESTS ESCAPE THROUGH WINDOWS Shortly before 4 a.m. yesterday the Commercial Hotel at Westport, a single storey wooden building of 16 rooms, was totally destroyed by fire. When discovered the fire had a good hold and the fire brigade had very little chance of quelling the outbreak. The building, which was owned by Mrs A. McManus, was occupied by Mr W. A. Bamford, who had taken over the licence three weeks ago. Both ha and his sister lost all their personal effects, although Mr Bamford was able to save a sum of money. Guests in the hotel escaped in the’r night attire after a hurried exit through bedroom Besides losing all his belongings one boarder lost more than. £3O. It is thought that the cause of the fire was a defective fireplace. The building was insured with the Liverpool. London, and Globe Insurance Company. Ltd., for £SOO, and the Guardian Assurance Company. Ltd., for £SOO. Contents were insured with the Standard Insurance Company, Ltd., for £350, and stock with the Royal Insurance Company, Ltd., for £ 4s °. _______________
