FRENCH SHIPS AT ALEXANDRIA
i Squadron Joins Allies 22,000T0N LORRAINE INCLUDED (H.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Hec. 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 31. The French warships which have been immobilised at Alexandria since the 1940 armistice have gone over to the Allied forces. This was announced yesterday by the Vichy radio and confirmed to-day in London. The Germans say that the Frencn crews gave in to British and American pressure and are enlisting with the Allied naval forces. The last list of French warships at Alexandria gave the strength as the 22,000-ton battleship Lorraine, four cruisers, three destroyers, and one sub. marine. The ships were immobilised and the breech blocks of the guns were removed in 1940. Since General Giraud established his headquarters in North Africa unofficial contacts are reported to have been maintained between him and Admiral Godeiroy. Commander of the Squadron. Four thousand five hundred sailors, were repatriated to France when the warships were immobilised and about 1500 remained with their ships.
