NEW RECTOR APPOINTED

PROFESSOR A. H. TOCKER CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE Professor A. H. Tocker was yesterday appointed rector of Canterbury University College for three years from March 1, 1943, or until such earlier time as a permanent academic head is appointed. Professor Tocker will assume his new office under the same conditions as the three former rectors, Dr. Charles Chilton, Dr. James Right, and Dr. H. G. Denham, each of whom retained his faculty position, on>appointments for three-year terms. There has, as yet, never been a full-time academic head at the college. . , The council approved the principle of a full-time academic head, who would devote his whole time to academic administration; and it also

agreed that steps be taken to collaborate with the other university colleges to gain support, so that the principle affirmed could be put into practice as soon as possible. Professor Albert Hamilton Tocker was born in New Zealand in 1884. He was educated at Victoria University College, Wellington, and graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1915, taking his Master of Arts degree two years later. After completing a post-graduate course at Birmingham University, Professor Tocker served in the Ist N.Z.E.Et from 1917-18. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed lecturer m economics at Canterbury University College and in 1926 he succeeded Professor J. B. Condliffe in the chair. In 1930 he represented ‘New Zealand at the International Labour Conference at Geneva, and was an adviser,, at the World Economic Conference in 1938. Professor Tocker has, at various times, been a member of the Government Committee of Economists and has written numerous articles on financial and economic subjects. .
