DISTRICT REHABILITATION COMMITTEE
ESTABLISHMENT URGED BY AKAROA COUNCIL The Akaroa County Council decided at a recent meeting to write to the Prime Minister urging the necessity for setting up a district committee for Banks Peninsula under the soldiers’ rehabilitation scheme. In reply to a letter sent by the council urging the setting up of a district committee, the Rehabilitation Board stated that the matter would be borne in mind when the board considered the establishment of further committees. Councillors pointed out that committees had recently been appointed in many districts. The chairman (Mr Joseph Hayward) said a local committee should be established at once, as already there were a number of soldiers who had returned from the present war who might require assistance. He considered the organisation could not be started too soon He also said that a local committee could deal morfe effectively with servicemen returning to the district, end local know-
ledge of land values for land settlement and loans could be handled more effectively through a local committee. It was decided to write to the Rehabilitation Board again and also to Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P.. and when replies were received to consult the Akaroa Borough Council and (he local sub-branch of the Returned Services’ Association about the constitution of the committee.
