LYTTELTON NEWS

BOROUGH COUNCIL The Borough Council is the controlling authority of the returned soldiers’ portion of the Lyttelton Public Cemetery, according to a letter received from the Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs at th« meeting of the council last night. The letter stated that a ruling had been asked for by the Lyttelton Returned Services’ Association and a reply had been sent to this effect. The council agreed to hold the matter ! over until it had received representations from the association. The Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) and Cr. R. E. Cairns were appointed to represent the council at the tunnel road conference. The Mayor and Crs. W. T. Foster and G. Briggs were appointed a committee to deal with applications for building permits. The estimates for the year were considered and adopted. The rates this year will be the same as for last year. Shortage of Coal The shortage of coal in Lyttelton was again discussed at the meeting of the. Borough Council last night, when a letter was received from a Lyttelton businessman stating that he was prepared to establish a coal business, but most of the coal firms in Christchurch had told him that there was little chance of obtaining coal. Cr, A. K. Dyne said the man was in a good financial position and had all the necessary plant. Many of the firms approached were retailers as well as wholesalers. and were not keen on extending the wholesale trade. He moved that a small sub-committee be set up to communicate with the Minister of Mines with a view to obtaining a supply of coal for Lyttelton. In seconding the motion. Cr. T. L. Young said that most of the residents of Lyttelton were doing essential work which necessitated them living in the port. They should not be placed at a disadvantage as compared with Christchurch residents regarding a supply of coal. He was satisfied that the firm at present in business in Lyttelton was doing its best, but could not cope with the demand. The motion was carried and the following committee was appointed: Crs. Young, Dyne, and Cairns.
