OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, October 4. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Moderate north-westerly -winds freshening: gradually and probably reaching; gale force later in exposed positions inland. Weather mainly fair to cloudy, and warm, but rain developing: later in the back country. Seas moderate.

WEST COAST -The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:<—

Moderate to strong north-wester-ly winds reaching: g-ale force in some exposed positions. Weather cloudy to. overcast and rain probable with some heavy falls. Temperatures mild. Seas rather rough to rough.

DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:-

Becoming cloudy to overcast in districts with a westerly aspect from Kawhia southwards and the far south, with at first scattered, and later more general rain. Fair in the eastern districts. Temperatures mild. An anti-cyclone is passing by to the north, but a deep depression is located over Tasmania and advancing across the South Tasman Sea.

Winds —Northerlies in Cook .Strait and on the East Coast of the South Island, elsewhere south-west to west at first, but gradually turning to northwest. Force moderate to strong and later rising to gale force about and south of Cook Strait.' Seas (New Zealand waters) —Rathei rough to rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits. Elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising; south of Kawhia Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate- but freshening north-westerly winds. Sear moderate, but rising, especially in the soutnern portion.
