MILITARY PARADE THROUGH CITY
♦ . • MECHANISED UNITS INCLUDED PART OF RECRUITING-WEEK PROGRAMME
As part of the recruiting week programme, the A and B Headquarters Companies of the First Battalion, Canterbury. Regiment, held an impressive march through the city last evening. The parade, which was under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel H. K. Kippenberger, moved off from the King Edward Barracks at 7.30 p.m. The motor-cyclists, in their distinctive uniform, led the way; then came the band of the Firs? Battalion. Canterbury Regiment, followed by the bugle band. With fixed bayonets, the A and B Headquarters Companies swung into line, their marching being a credit to them. The rear was brought up by nine of the new army vehicles. In addition to the.bands, there were 150 members of A and B Companies on parade. Thirty motor-cyclists took part.
A pleasing feature of the parade ■was the very keen interest shown by the public. Apart from those who waited on the streets to see the parade go by, there was a good attendance at the King Edward Barracks to watch the preparations for the parade. After the parade, the troops returned to the barracks, where the normal training programme was carried out. Here, again, keen interest was shown by the public, many persons staying until the parade ended. Recruiting in the battalion has •> shown a considerable increase during the last few weeks, and many prospective recruits of a very fine type are offering their services.
