♦ The monthly meeting of the Staveley Women’s Institute was held witn Mrs W. Norman presiding. The librarian “reported the purchase-of several new books. Mesdames Pawsey and Durran were elected to represent the Staveley Institute at the federation meeting at Methven. The roll-call was ‘‘My Greatest Extravagance.” Miss R. Robins, Association for. Country Education tutor, gave a lecture on the balanced diet.
Competitions resulted: Savoury: Mrs Bufton 1, Mrs S. Goldsmith 2. Fresh eggs: Mrs Wright 1, Mrs Pawsey 2, Mrs Bufton 3. Preserved eggs; Mrs Norman 1, Miss Norman 2. Spike: Mrs Wright 1, Mrs Bufton 2, Mrs S. Goldsmith 3. Bloom: Miss Johnstone 1, Mrs Hicks 2, Mrs Wright 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Ogg, Olliver, Russell, and Scott.
A Le Touquet waiter has received £IOO reward for finding in an armchair at the Casino the '£. 1400 diamond and platinum clip lost 10 days before by the Countess of Dudley.
A decree has been promulgated in Abyssinia prohibiting all persons of the white races, of any nationality, from frequenting restaurants, cafes, and wine shops patronised by natives.
