CANTERBURY J.C.

CUP ACCEPTORS GOOD NOMINATIONS Another move leading up to the spring carnival at Riccarton was made yesterday evening, when the first acceptances were announced for the New Zealand Cup, along with nominations for eight other races at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s November carnival. Twenty-four horses dropped out of the Cup, but the field was not greatly weakened, as the 31 remaining in include all the, best material. There were no surprises in the defections. Catalogue and Queen of Song, the highest-weighted pair to go out, will be racing in Melbourne, while Lowenberg is lame, and Dictate is backward, as a Cup candidate, after a few weeks on the easy list. Seventeen of the non-acceptors were weighted on the minimum, so they will not be greatly missed. Those left in are the best of the nomination list. They include Wotan, Cerne Abbas, and The Buzzer, winners at two miles, along with Argentic and Willie Win, who have been placed over that distance. Cerne Abbas, the winner last year, is a notable inclusion, as she is in . Australia yet, but possibly there is a chance that she will be sent home without doing the Melbourne part of the trip. A first acceptance of v 3l is six more than last year. The nominations for other races total 292, compared with 294 last year. In most cases the difference is slight, but there is material for a larger field than usual in the Stewards’ Handicap, with 40 nominations. 10 more than last year. Riccarton stables claim the three topweights in their 11 New Zealand Cup candidates, but in this race, as in the others for which nominations were taken yesterday, the best feature is the support received from outside districts. The North Island seems likely to have plenty of horses at Riccarton for next month’s carnival.
