Commander G. Dennistoun arrived in Christchurch from the North Island by the steamer express yesterday morning. * <

Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, returned to Christchurch from the north yesterday morning.

Mr J. Roy Smith was a passenger from Wellington by yesterday morning’s steamer express. Mr J. Sutherland Ross, of Dunedin, arrived from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning.

At the annual general meeting of the Canterbury Mountaineering-and Tramping Club Mr W. A. Kennedy was elected an honorary life member of the club in recognition of his valued services over a long period. Mr R. McGillivray, Fields Superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, will leave on Monday evening for the North Island. He will visit Auckland and will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Grassland Association at Hamilton. Mr McGillivray will return to Christchurch about October 13.

-Mr A. G. Harper, officer in charge of local government in the Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, returned by the Mariposa yesterday after an official visit to Mexico and the United States. He represented the New Zealand Government at che International Town Planning and Housing Congress in Mexico City and afterwards investigated local government problems in America. He will furnish a report to the Government. —Press Association. Mr E. J. Tarr, K.C., president of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, who attended the recent British Commonwealth Relations Conference in Sydney as chairman of the Canadian delegation, visited Christchurch yesterday.

Mr A. W. Duncan, director of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., has been appointed general manager of the company in succession to Mr T. B. Gusscott, who has retired for health reasons after 16 years’ association with the company. Mr J. R. Cuningham, who has been in St. George’s Hospital for some weeks and. has undergone an operation, is now progressing satisfactorily.
