TERRITORIAL FORCES
EFFECT OP EVENTS ' IN EUROPE
J • The stimulating effect that developments in the international, situation have had -on recruilng in the\territorial forces throughout the Dominion is confirmed in a. aatement to “The Press” yesterday by Major H. M. Foster, N.Z.S.C., Area Officer at Christchurch. f
“The development* in the situation were very sudden aid had everybody gasping a bit,” said jfajor Foster, “but it was very gratifying to receive so many offers of sewice, particularly from old soldiers. [There has been a large number of inquiries at headquarters in Christchurch also from young men wanting to join territorial units. The result is a definite improvement in recruiting. Had-a special a PP£f~ been made for recrtits because of the crisis I feel sure -that there would have been a great response. “Now that things have taken a turn for the better overseas I do hope mat this increased interest will not decline,” he said. ‘lt is not sufficient to have such enthiiiasm five minutes before a war starts. | The object of the territorial forces is 1b train leaders, we do not hope to train a full force we can mobilise at a moment’s notice. ir we have trained leaders we have a sound foundation on which a strong force can be built.” f . .. To mention only bne instance of tne improvement in requiting, Major x ->ster said that at the parade of A Company of the First attalion of the Canterbury Regiment/on Thursday night nine new recruits -yere enrolled. me recruiting in all tbits'was well above the average. |
