TAKAHANGA CLUB MEETS
The annual meeting of the ' Takahanga Tennis Club was'held recently. Mr F. Taylor presided. Eight new members were elected.
The report showed that the last season was very satisfactory in every way. Matches were played against the Waiau, Oaro, and St. Michael’s clubs. A new pavilion was erected by the aid of working bees, and it was proposed to carry out further, similar work during the coming season. Mr L. Shannon, who was an enthusiastic member of the club before his departure from the district, was made a life member. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £3 '2s sd, and the assets were £l4 18s 7d above liabilities. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr J. Boyd; president, Mr T. Taylor; vice-presidents, Dr. R. L. Withers, Messrs J. A. Johnston, E. J. Williams. J. C. Smith, F. J. Monk, and P. Curran; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. Drabble: auditor, Mr E. R. McClatchy; club captains, Mr E. R. McClatchy and Miss M. Osmond; vice-cap-tains, Mr McLachlan and Miss N. Pluck; committee, Misses E. Ferry and D. Osmond, Messrs D. Taylor and F. Symes; match committee, Misses M, Osmond and N. Pluck, Messrs T. Drabble, E. -R. McClatchy. and McLachlan; ladder stewards. Miss M, Osmond and Mr E. R. McClatchy. The opening day was fixed for today.
AKAROA - DOMAIN CLUB OPENS
The Akaroa, Domain Tennis Club opened its season on Thursday in fine, cold weather. Tire Mayor (Mr F. Davis), in declaring the season open, remarked on the fine appearance of the courts, and wished the club every success. Mr V. Brocherie. club captain, and Mr J. H. Squires, of Christchurch, also spoke Cups won in last year’s tournament were presented- by the Mayor as _£ollow:—Women’s singles, Mrs M. Richardson; men’s singles, Colin fiPool; mixed doubles for cup given by Mr. H. L. Dyer, Miss D. Pool and E. H. Giddens. Competitions were won as follows: Putting, women. Miss Richardson; men, Shuttleworth; quoits, women. Miss West; men, Shuttleworth. ,
MOCK ELECTION AT SWANNANOA
SUPPORTERS OF NATIONAL ' PARTY ENTERTAIN
Proceeds amounting to about £2O were obtained by supporters of the National Parly at Swannanoa from a mock election held in- the Swannanoa Hall on Thursday., night. About 150. were present. Mr M. Spencer-Bower presided. The speakers were Mr and Mrs N. M. Izard, Messrs E. D. R. Smith, H. M. Burgin. and Spencer-Bower. ; Mr Burgin was elected candidate for Swannanoa. After the election, there .was a dance, for which Miller’s orchestra played the music. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr J. Petrie and partner. Arrangements for the election and dance were made by a committee comprising Mesdames Evans, H. M. Burgin. A. Tutton, Ward, Treleaven, Misses Spencer-Bower and Tutton, and Messrs Burgin, Harman, J. Petrie. SpencerBower. Evans, and Dawson.
PLUNKET SOCIETY
MARSHLAND COMMITTEE MEETS
Mrs L. Hale (president) presided over the monthly meeting of the Marshland Plunket Committee. Letters of thanks were received from the Christchurch committee and from the convener of the produce stall at the recent Plunket Day appeal for the produce and donations sent-from Marshland.
Arrangements for the annual fancy dress party on October 29 were completed.
DINNER TO FOOTBALL TEAM KAIKOURA JUNIOR PLAYERS The members of the Kaikoura junior Rugby football team were the guests of honour at a dinner given recently. Mr B. Dooley, president of the Kaikoura Club, presided," and was supported by Mr W. Mockett, president of the Hurunui Sub-Union, and Mrs Mockett, and Mr Noel Ross . (Culverden). Toasts included “The King,” “The Junior Team.” “Donors of Trophies,” “The Hurunui Sub-Union,” “Referees,” “Selectors,” “The Ladies,” and "The President.” Mr Mockett congratulated the team on going through the season without being beaten. Kaikoura has won the cup presented by Mrs F. Smith in 1920 six times. The Harrison Memorial Cup, given in 1927, has. been won by.Kaikoura three times. The Amuri Shield has also been won by Kaikoura.

FINALS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS AT CHEVIOT
The best scores In a four-ball bogey match played recently by|the Cheviot Golf Club are as follows:—L. H. Marshall and T. Kerr 3 up. T. D. Childs and T. Gurnsey 3 up, L. H. Marshall and T. Kerr won on a- count back. The final of the men’s championship was won by L. H. Marshall, who beat T. Kerr, 1 up, on the thirty-seventh green. Mrs E. Edridge beat Miss ,K. Rutherford In the final of the women’s championship.
CHEVIOT BRANCH OF LABOUR PARTY
There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Cheviot branch of the Labour Party. After the meeting the Workers’ Educational Association group-met, and Mr J. Johnson, M.A., tutor, addressed the meeting and took part in the discussion.
