+ —: RESTRICTION ON NUMBER OF CLUBS DECISION OF ROYAL AND ANCIENT (Received September 29, 2 p.m.) LONDON; September 28. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews has decided to restrict the number of golf clubs to be carried to 14. The limitation of clubs came before a business meeting of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in May last year, when the Rules of Golf Committee submitted a recommendation that on and after January 1, 1938, the number of clubs should be restricted to 14. However, the recommendation was not then approved by members. Action was taken in the United States and Canada. A statement issued by the United States Golf Association on the problem read: "We have come to the conclusion that the limitation of the number of clubs would tend to restore the making of individual shots, and increase the skill of the player. "The multiplicity of clubs tends towards mechanisation of the game. In earlier days players used to change their swing in order to execute the various types of shots. In recent years the tendency has been merely to take a different club." Thus the United States Association decided to limit the number of clubs to 14 as from January 1 of this year. The Royal Canadian Golf Association adopted a similar proposal. WANGANUII PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP MISS* FLEMING BEATEN IN FINAL (TBXSS AMOCIA.TIOK TRiEoaAU.) WANGANUI, September 29.
