EGYAL CHIEF BRIGHT "PROSPECTS AT # RANDWICht la a letter received -yesterday, F. I>. Jones said that Cerne Abbas, who had been off colour since.she arrived in Sydney, has been doing better, of * lale. She ran at Jtosehill on September 17, and although a long way from the money, she-ran much better.than in the Newcastle Cud. She win not race at the big Bandwick meeting until the third and fourth days. The Wrecker'has thrived since leaving home, and may be a fair-horse yet. Jones has been offered a good price for him mate than once. Royal Chief, says Jones, "could not be doing better. He had all the-luck in running in the Chelmsford Stakes, but won really well and in. Jones's opinion he will be difficult to-head off. in any race he starts in at the Bandwick gathering. 2. Bartle is riding him in the Metropolitan Handicap. Gold Rod won attractively at RosehilL but Jones thinks that Avenger will be the stoutest opponent for Royal Chief in the Colin Stephen Stakes. SOUTHLAND NOTES WYNWOOD DESTROYED ITHE PRESS Special Service.] INVERCARGILL, September 29. Razzle Dazzle and Gold Light, two great, mares in their day, are to be mated with Woodend. Both are well up in years, and have failed to breed in recent seasons, and they will be turned out with the Lemberg horse. 1 While being exercised at Invercargill this morning Wynwood broke a bone in his fetlock joint and had to be destroyed. He was being ridden by his trainer, J. Gray, at the time, and was only doing three-quarter pace work. It was bad luck, as he was in first-class order for immedia,te en- | gagements, having won in his last two starts at the Otago Hunt meeting. He was troubled with unsoundness earlier in his career in the same joint. Most of the horses engaged at Dunedin worked at Invercargill this morning. Work was done on the outside of the course proper. The two-year-olds. Blissful Lady and Royal Money, ran an easy half mile in 56sec. Both are by Paper Money and can be expected to show up. Mondello, a two-3'ear-old filly by Nigger Minstrel from Lucky Pal, ran three furlongs from a standing start in 38 l-ssec, the first furlong in 13 1-5 i sec. She completed her task comfortably, and ft was in keeping with some outstanding work she has been doing during the last week. She is a level headed filly, and in excellent order for Dunedin engagements. There is no doubting her speed and the manner in which she has worked suggests she will carry on with it. Astral Flash, Sea Lady, and Ardmayle ran six furlongs in Imin 22 2-5 sec, and they were going easily throughout Sea Lady had a break on the other pair at the start, but they soon closed on her. The last-named is a smart novice. Milford and Cintilla ran a mile comfortably in lmin 50sec, each half m 55sec. Milford is all the better for the racing he had at Geraldine and should show up at Wingatui. Cintilla has improved in recent weeks and his was a good effort. Ardchoille beat Mona's Song over seven furlongs in lmin 37sec, the last half in 55sec. Ardchoille has not done a great deal of fast work, but has come on well during the last fortnight. Jedburgh and Doubleack ran an easy half mile in 55sec. There was not much pace on until the final' furlong, and Jedburgh was doing it the better. Jedburgh raced well enough at Geraldine to suggest that she will win a novice race shortly. Moonraider and Recall ran five furlongs in lmin 6sec. Recall is in better order now than he has been for some time, whila Moonrafder is a promising Ally due to make her first start at. Wingatui. Boswell, who was lame after racing at Geraldine, is right again, and has been out doing easy work. He was kicked no fewer than three times at the post at Geraldine, and this was the cause of his being lame. Paladino, who broke down on the first day at Geraldine, was not fit to return tp Invercargill, and he was left at Orari. If he is.able to travel he will be brought to Wingatui next week and then sent south. He was in a bad way, and it will be many months before be is able to race again.

> Sir Simper, who was returned from Australia a short time back, will be mated with 20 mares at Chelandry Stud. Two years ago he had a light season, and his first crop of foals, now yearlings, have come in for favourable comment.

Straigfttcourse, who was bred at the Stonyhurst Stud, has been purchased by a Southland breeder and will dp stud duty here. It is understood that his purchase for the remount's encouragement scheme for the Win ton district has been recommended. He is the sire of Lord Nuffield and other winners.

Set Sail has produced a filly by Man's Pal. Her owner, Dr. J. E. Rogers, of Gore, has. been anxious to secure a colt from her, but so far has been unable to do so. This is the fifth filly she has produced.

METHVEN T.C.

Track Work at Rlcearton JThe conditions at Riccarton yesterday were favourable for fast times. There was some smart work on the inside of the trial grass, and an interesting gallop on the course proper a few feet out from the rails. On Trial Grass

Trench Fight opened the early morning proceedings by galloping a mile in lmin 38 3-ssec, the first half mile in 48sec. Trench Fight is such a hard puller that he generally goes at top speed, and can always be depended on for fast travelling. . ■ Counterblast and Winning Rival ran half a mile along the back stretch in 48sec. The latter went well, but Counterblast, who has had a short respite because of soreness, was going better than Winning Rival at the finish. Tantivy finished in front of Flame Queen at the end of half a mile in 49 l-ssec, and Rebel Rank, by Robespierre from Front Rank, a former useful Chokebore representative, covered the. same ground in 49 2-ssec. For Dunedin

Density, who is to race at Wingatui, galloped half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and Good Passage beat Keen Sight in 53sec. Keen Sight, who was intended to race in the Dunedin Guineas, will not make the trip, and his absence will leave the way clear for G. Humphries to ride Defaulter. Nightdress, picked up by Aymon at the half-mile, ran five furlongs in lmin 3 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. : .

Dictate and Palmyra had a similar task in lmin 4 l-ssec, the last three in 39 4-ssec. The former will not • be included in to-day's acceptance for the New, Zealand Cup.

Alby and Contract ran five furlongs in lmin ssec, the last four in. 51sec. Both we, to . contest the high-weight event at Kurbw to-morrow. Sparkle and Colonel Rouge finished abreast after covering six furlongs in lmin 17 l-ssec, the last four in 52sec. This pair will be taken to Wingatui by E. Scoullar.

Financiere and Kilrobe recorded similar time, taking 53 l-ssec for the last four.

Dranoel, a four-year-old by Robespierre from Rose of Orange, trained by D. J. O'Connor for Mr L. W. Storry, showed further improving form by galloping five furlongs with Romarin in lmin 4 2-ssec, the last four in 50 2-ssec. Romarin is to have her next

Great Flight and Harwich galloped seven furlongs in lmin 33 2-ssec, and Rousseau and Gillie took lmin 34 2-5 sec. Waitaka had useful work over a mile in lmin 47 l-ssec, after taking 50 l-ssec for the first half, and Willie Win followed in lmin 49sec f the sec-' ond half in 53 3-ssec. Willie Win will be ridden in'the New Zealand Cup by C. G. Goulgbro. Six Furlong. Gallops The Masquerader ran six furlongs in* lmin 18 and.Kinnoull was held in restraint. over the same distance. Sovereign Lady and Disdain were to have galloped together, but the former broke away, - and ran six furlongs on her own in lmin 16 4-ssec. Disdain followed at three-quarter pace. On Course Proper!! Wild Chase and Defaulter were companions in an attractive gallop over six furlongs. From a moving start they ran the first two furlongs in 25sec, and came home the last four in 50sec, making lmin 15sec for the journey. Defaulter, ridden by C. Wilson, was never asked for any extra effort, and appeared to be going very easy over the final stages, while Wild Chase, with G. Humphries in the saddle, had to be kicked up twice in the run home to keep up with the three-year-old, who finished half a length in front of him. This was Defaulter's first serious gallop this season, and it was one of the best efforts seen on the course for some time. It indicated that Defaulter has. retained all the ability i which marked his. two-year-old performances, and suggested he Will be a good winner again this season. Wild Chase has been galloping exceptionally well of late, but his young rival had him. struggling most of the way. Novice Hurdlers The West Coast horses, Gold Boy and Bit o' Blue, are the latest additions to the list of hurdling recruits at Riccarton, and yesterday were given some education over the pony fences. Recovered j L. Dulieu, who suffered severe head' injuries at the Wellington winter meet- { ing in July, is riding work again at, Ellerslie, but it«is expected to be a while yet before he resumes race riding. A Riding Record The Kurow meeting of 1891 was identified with one of the most remarkable riding records ever put up in New Zealand. The programme was made UP by a hurdle race, a trot, and six flat races. . W. Sharp, a successful rider of the day. rode the winners of the six flat races. He won a Maiden Plate on Kauroo. the Kurow Cup on Miss Mack, the Counties Plate Handicap on Miss Mack, Hack Selling Race on Sandy, Jockey Club Handicap on Roseleaf, and Consolation Handicap on: Dunmore. Sharp was regarded as one of the best riders of his day. Among his important wins were the first Great Easter won by Hippomes, the Great Autumn on Captain Webster, the Dunedin Cup on Occident . and Adamant, Birthday Handicap on Captain Webster, and the Invereargill Cup oh La Rose, in addition to many wins of. minor note. All the above horses except Adamant were raced in partnership by the late Mr J. Stephenson
