"ROUND THE GORGES" ROAD RACE
SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP
The "Round-the-Gorges" and South Island championship cycling road race to be held to-morrow, starting from Papanui and finishing at the Addington Trotting Grounds, has attracted al] the leadinj riders of the South Island and some of the most prominent in the North Island, including O. Disley, who won the North Island road championship at Napier last Saturday. It is likely that the winner of the championship will come from the scratch mark, on which there are eight riders. After Disley's performance last week, his chances for success in the fastest time honours must be bright C W. Shilton is strongly favoured because of his remarkable run of successes this year. A. V. Blakeway, whe was fifth in the North Island race, is likely to improve on this effort. R. Dutton, of Wellington, beat Shilton in this race, but it is expected that Shilton will turn the tables on Saturday. ,* C. E. Sullivan, who made a New Zealand record for 100 kilometres last Saturday, and A. J. Lancaster, have equal chances with Disley and Shilton. P ! Smart, of Dunedin, 1. Forgie, R. Romble, and A. V. Blakeway are riders whose chances are good. All the leading juniors are placed on the 20-minute mark, including A. W. McLachlan, who recently won the South Island junior championship, and N. A. Murray and R. H. Knight recent winners of the 25 miles and 50 -kilometres .Canterbury championships respectively. Before the finish of the race a seven miles and a half professional race (10 laps of the trotting track) will be held. Trophies will be presented at a dance on Monday evening. _.
