GALA CUPS
FOUR NEW TROPHIES GIVEN PRIMARY SCHOOLS* SPORTS ASSOCIATION Four additional silver cups to replace banners and other trophies for competitions of the Ashburton County Primary Schools' Sports Association were received from the Gala Cup trustees at the meeting of the executive of the association this week. Mr M. J. Leith presided in the absence of the president (Mr J. Trevor Thomas). Members expressed appreciation of the support given by the trustees in giving cups to encourage the sports sponsored by the association among school children. Many previous gifts of trophies were mentioned. It was reported that the cups would replace the existing trophies for the senior basketball, junior football, and junior rounders competitions in the town section, and the basketball competition in the country section. Mr E. S. Chambers (chairman of the football committee) reported that Mr A. E. Whiting, of Mayfield, had offered a cup for the junior section of the annual south-of-the-river seven-a-side Rugby football tournament.
Letters were received from the Canterbury and North Canterbury associations congratulating the football committee on its successful organisation of the first all-Canterbury primary schools' Rugby football tournament. Reports on the winter sports activities of the association in organising basketball and football competitions were presented by the special committees in charge It was decided to open the rounders, baseball rounders, and cricket competitions on the first Thursday in October. It was said that Mr I. M. Hamilton had agreed to give an address to teachers on methods of coaching for cricket. Because it was considered that children could not be properly trained during the winter, it was decided to ask the Ashburton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club if it would consent to the inter-schools relay race for the Empire Games pennant being run in March instead of at the Labour Day sports meeting, which will be conducted by the club in connexion with the gala. It was decided to write to the Ashburton Rugby Union congratulating the representative,team on its perform- I ance in the challenge match against J Southland for the Ranfurly Shield. I CREDIT BALANCE SHOWN ASHBURTON TENNIS CLUB MEETS SEASON TO OPEN NEXT MONTH A credit balance of £64 Is lOd was I shown in the balance-sheet of the Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club presented at the annual meeting last evening. Last season opened with a credit of £27 2s Id. Mr F. W. Seldon (president) presided at the meeting. Last season opened earlier than for some years, but a great deal of broken j weather towards the end of the season considerably curtailed tennis, said the annual report. The financial position | showed an improvement during the I year, it continued, but provision would have to be made for necessary repairs. Improvements costing £l3 12s Id had been carried out in the women's section of the pavilion. Three teams were entered in the competitions of the Mid-Canterbury Tennis Sub-Asso-ciation. Senior representative honours were obtained by P. M. McLauchlan, R. W. Joyce, J. D. Coward, Mesdames F. W. Dickens, N. Robilliard, Misses H. Harper, T. Cowan, and K. McQuilkin. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr F. W. Seldon; vice-presi-dents, Mr N. L. F. Wood and Dr. W, R. Ryburn; club captain,. Mr M. R. Pilbrow; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr T. L. Crooks; men's committee, Messrs V. W. Russell, G. C. Nlcoll, P. S. Bonifant, J. W. Pooley, C. Denham, C. G. de C. Drury. and J. H. Chapman; women's committee, Mesdames N. Robilliard, F. W. Dickens, Misses A. Amos, M. Madden, L. Gilchrist, H. Harper, E. Pilbrow, B. Anderson, and K. Anderson: delegate to Ashburton Sports Association, Mr Crooks; delegates to Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs Pilbrow and Nicoll; auditor, Mr R. J. Tucker.
The opening of the season was fixed for October 22.
An alteration to the rules to provide for an amendment to some subscriptions, of which notice had been given, was approved.
ASHBURTON FIRE BRIGADE The winter programme of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was concluded on Wednesday evening, When Mr '. . R. Richardson addressed members and representatives of the Allen ton Volunteer Fire Brigade, on pumps and water supply. DeputySuperintendent J. Hepburn, of Palmerston North, spoke on fire brigade training and equipment Training in the open will start within a few weeks.
