WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

HAREWOOD BRANCH . The Harewood branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a special meeting in the rooms of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Papanui. Mrs A. C. Orchard presided, and visitors were present from the Belfast, Marshland, Ouruhia, Styx, Papanui, Waimairi, . and Yaldhurst branches. Mrs H. A. Nutt, provincial organiser, spoke of the work of the division, and later answered questions asked by members. Mrs Moncrieif (Papanui-Waimam) thanked Mrs Nutt, and presented her with a floral token. Mrs A. M. Carpenter (Fernside) gave an account of some of her travels in England and Holland, and described the Coronation ceremony. She also _ showed many photographs and curios. A floral spray was presented to Mrs Carpenter, who was thanked by Mrs Orchard. SOUTHBKOOK-FLAXTON BRANCH A demonstration on sewing machines was given at the September meeting of the Southbrook-Flaxton branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mrs Strong presided. It was decided to hold a social evening on October 3. Competitions resulted as follows: Article from calico, Mrs Atkinson 1, Mrs Stanton 2. Mrs Bowman 3; flower, Mrs C. M. 9rcher 1, Mrs Fleming 2, Mrs F. Mclntosh 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Loflhagen, Schluter, Sinclair, and Miss Drage. BROADFIELD Mrs W. Wallace presided at a meeting of the Broadfield branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs McLaughlin (Tai Tapu) gave an interesting demonstration on making stools from tins, and-also gave a report of the - division’s conference held recently ,in Wellington., Results of competitions were: Prettiest nightdress, Miss M. Wallace 1, Miss P. Wallace 2, Miss G. Wallace 3; lemon honey, Mrs D. Butcher 1, Mrs E. Guilford 2, Miss M. Wallace 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs R. Wheeler and Miss Annie Smith. The Ashley basketball team won the North * Canterbury Sub-Association competition by a margin of three points, and now holds the Drever Cup for the year. This is the first time the local i team has held this cup. t During the evening the chairman of the school committee, Mr P. J. Lindsay, asked Miss J. Croft (secre- 1 tary) to present a floral spray to each member of the team. Mr J. McLeod . (Loburn) presented the cup. Miss E. ODDFELLOWS’ BALL AT WAIAU The Walau Hall was crowded for the annual ball held by the Walau Oddfellows. Muir and G; Hueston were masters of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Miss McIntosh and Mr R. Neale, Mr and Mrs J. Muir, and Miss Pat. Forbes and Mr J. Lester. COMING-OF-AGE PARTIES An enjoyable dance was held in the Hampstead Memorial Hall In honour of the coming-of-age of Miss Loma Thomas. The time was spent In dancing and games, prize-winners being Miss S. Hume and Mr F. Hume, Miss Waaka and Mr J. Frlcker. Exhibition dances were given by Misses Iris John, Mona Ingram, Lorraine and Daphne Cox, and Master R. Cox. Songs were sung by Mr M. Morse and Miss G. Quinn. Music was supplied by Mrs G. Pile.
