DANGER OF RIVER FLOODING MEETING WITH WAIMAKARIRI TRUST The secretary of the Waimakanri Harbour Board wrote to a meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council last evening about the danger of flooding because of the gradual rise of the river-bed in the lower reaches of the river, and asked if the council would ioin with the board in approaching the Waimakariri River Trust to discuss a scheme for raising the embankment to prevent danger from flooding "in the borough area. ' . _ . There were present the DeputyMayor (Mr A. E. Brown), Councillors A. Linklater, W. Hart, H. Rinaldi, A. Gordon. A. S. Palmer, and R. C. Stewart. • , • „ . The Mayor (the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery) and Cr. Gordon were appointed to represent the council at the meeting with the trust. Plans for the erection of a new hotel on a site on the Main North road to replace the Kaikanui Hotel, recently destroyed by fire, were approved, subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the Health Department for the placing of the sanitary arrangements at least 12 feet from the street frontage. ... In view of the high cost of the council’s proposed high-water pressure and sewerage scheme, Mr R. F; Joyce wrote suggesting that full details be submitted to the ratepayers before raising the loan. The letter was received. The secretary of the- Kaiapoi School Committee wrote thanking the council for its offer of five acres at the rifle range reserve as a planting area to commemorate the centennial, and asked to be' advised when - the area would be ready for use. The letter was referred to the reserves committee with power to act. The Town Clerk (Mr R. J. Smith) reported that.the new stopbank at Kairaki had been completed and the raising and strengthening of the old stopbank was now being carried out. Cr. Rinaldi drew attention to the need for repairs to the tar-sealing in Raven street. It was decided that the work be put in hand immediately. The flnanciar statement showed: —Receipts since last meeting, . £1244 15s 10d; debit bank balance, £1753 7s 3d; accounts passed for payment, £1553 4s Bd.
