CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING CHRISTCHURCH LADIES* CLUB SOME SURPRISES YESTERDAY Yesterday the Christchurch Ladles’ Golf Club’s championship tournament begqn at the Shirley links in good weather, with the course In perfect order. There were 26 entries for the club championship, including Miss Helen Buchanan, the holder of the title, and Miss Maberley Beadel, who was beaten in the final last year, but who previously held the championship on many occasions. Miss Valmai Fleming, the title winner In 1933 and 1936, and Miss Betty Rutherford, the holder in 1934 and 1935, did not enter. Miss Fleming is in the North Island and Miss Rutherford only recently returned from Australia and was unable to enter. There were a few surprises yesterday, notably the defeat of the title-holder. Miss Buchanan, by Mrs E. J. Pumphrey, and the defeat of Mrs W. Toomey who has been playing consistently well for months and who won the last three bogey competitions. She had’ to lower her colours to Mrs T, T. Armstrong, jun., who played good golf to win the match, 2 up. Miss P. Norton did well to beat Miss E. WhiteParsons after a grim battle that continued to the nineteenth green. The following were the details:— First Round—Mrs G. Reid beat Mrs M. Bethell, 2 and 1; Mrs E. Chartres beat Mrs G. Kingscote, 2 and 1; Miss H. Loughnan beat Mrs D. H. Butcher, 3 and 2; Mrs van Asch beat Mrs A. E. Barker, 4 and 3; Miss P. Norton beat Mrs E. H. Clark, 7 and 5; Miss K. Rutherford beat' Mrs I. Buchanan at the nineteenth: Mrs T. T. Armstrong beat Mrs Butters, 5 and 4; Miss R. Cracroft Wilson won from Miss N. prater by default; Miss E. Nutt won from Miss Cameron Smith by default: Mrs E. J. Pumphrey beat Miss B. Gould. 4 and 3. Second Round—Mrs A. C. McKillop beat Mrs Reid, 8 and 6; Miss Loughnan beat Mrs Chartres, 2 and 1; Miss Beadel beat Mrs van Asch, 3 and 1; Miss Norton beat Miss E. White-Parsons at the nineteenth: Misst Rutherford won from Miss J. Stevenson by default: Mrs Armstrong beat Mrs Toomey, 2 up; Miss Nutt beat Miss Cracrpft Wilson, 1 up; Mrs Pumphrey beat Miss Buchanan. 3 and 1. ■ Junior Challenge Bowl The matches for the Junior challenge bowl were played, for the first time, on handicap, and many close games resulted. In the first round two went to the twentieth. and one to the twenty-first greens. Those who survived the first two rounds were Mesdames A. A. Boon, R. Bell, Kenneth Gresson, J. F. Cracroft Wilson. S. T bf annual golf match for the Bank of New Zealand Canterbury Cup was played at Shirley on Monday (Dominion Day) in ideal weather. Most of the Canterbury branches of the bank were represented, and entries were received from as far souOi as Waimate. The match consisted of two rounds of stroke play off handicap, with concurrent medal matches f °r both morning and afternoon rounds. The winner of the cup was C. M. Clarkson. with rounds of 69 and 75, a total of O’Callaghan was runner-up With a score of 70. 75—145. R. C. Morgan won tlie morning medal with a card reading 88, 16—72, and J. M. Mitchell won afternoon event with a card of 92 20 72. The trophy for the best gross score over both rounds was won by A P. O Callaghan, whose 78 in the morning was not bettered all day. e Mr A. T. HAY MACKENZIE WINS TITLE MARLBOROUGH PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS [THE PRESS Special Service.] BLENHEIM, September 27. The West Coast golf champion, R. Hay Mackenzie (Westport) secured a further title when he annexed the Marlborough provincial championship yesterday beating E. Reid (Marlborough), 5 and 3, in the final. The tournament was contested over three days, and drew 70 entries including players from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Westport, and Nelson. Th© semi-finalists w©re Hay IM&ckeuzie Gr. N. Francis (Christchurch) and Reid and J. Jeffries (Marlborough), and in the semi-finals Hay Mackenzie beat Francis 3 and 2. and Reid beat Jeffries 1 up.
