CHIEF OF AIR STAFF
♦ SUCCESSOR TO GROUP CAPTAIN COCHRANE WING COMMANDER SAUNDERS APPOINTED (press association telegram.) DUNEDIN, September 26. When Group Captain the Hon. R. A. Cochrane, Chief of the Air Staff, relinquishes his position next January, he will be succeeded by Wing Commander H. W. L. Saunders, M.C., D.F.C., M.M. This announcement was made by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) during an address at St. Kilda to-night. The Minister said that Wing Commander Saunders would come to New Zealand, possibly for two yer.rs, and he hoped that when the Government's plan for the development of the Royal New Zealand Air Force was completed, it would be possible for a New Zealander to be sufficiently trained to take over'the position of Chief of the Air Staff.
