RUSSELL»S FLAT The combined August and September meeting of the Russell's Flat Women's Institute was held recently. Mrs Clarke presided. Miss Howarth (Sheffield) gave a demonstration on rug-making. Hostesses were Misses Hawkins, L. Wason, and M, Duncan.
Competitions were won as follows: Wood fibre flowers, senior, Mrs Palmer 1, Mrs Maber 2; junior. Miss A. Bloor 1. Miss Hawkins 2; garment, senior, Mrs Palmer 1, Mrs Maber 2, Mrs Bryson 3: juniors. Miss A. Williams 1. Miss A. Bloor 2, Miss E. Duncan 3; buttonhole. Miss Williams 1, Miss Bloor 2; handkerchief. Miss Hawkins 1, Miss Bloor 2; sandwiches. Miss Williams 1, Miss Bloor 2; cake. Mrs Maber 1, Mrs Hawke 2. Best blooms were entered by Mrs Cooper and Miss Hawkins.
OHOKA Mrs Richards presided over a small attendance at a meeting of the Ohoka Women's Institute. Miss Fogo gave a demonstration on loose covers. Mrs Steele and Miss Bailey were appointed delegates to the half-yearly federation meeting. Final arrangements were made for the garden party on October 21. Hostesses were Mesdames Lucas and Heron, and Miss M. Hide. Competition results were:—Narcissi: Mrs Lucas 1, Mrs B. Pearce 2, Mrs W. Martyn 3. Bloom: Mrs Lucas 1, Mrs Heron 2, Mrs Maynard 3. Vase: Mrs Lucas 1, Miss Duff 2, Mrs W. Martyn 3.
CHEVIOT GROUP A meeting 6f the Cheviot Groun of Women's Institutes was held recently. Arrangements were made lor the group's section at the arts and crafts display to be held in conjunction with the half-yearly meeting of the North Canterbury Federation in Christchurch. Marshalls for the sections were appointed as fallows: Mesdames B. N Buttle. J. Fitzsimmons, Misses L. Coppin, M. Harrison, and D. Coe. A report of the show of work held recently was considered very satisfactory as there was a record number of entries and the quality, of work was very high. The balance-sheet showed a small credit. It was decided to place ion record the appreciation of the services of the convener (Mrs B. N. But[tle). Invitations to be present at the birthday parties of the Parnassus and Domett institutes -were received. Arrangements were made for lectures to be given by Miss V. McMillan, organiser of the Association of Country Education and Miss J. Leadbetter, of Scotland, who is touring New Zealand for the Victoria League. Hostesses were Mesdames A. W. Leaman and G. Harrison. ANISEED The monthly meeting of the Aniseed Women's Institute was held recently. Mrs P. Davies presided. The roll-call was "The happiest time of life." The following were the winners of the competitions:—Articles, Mrs Davidson; cake, Mrs Langbein 1, Mrs Shaw 2; jumbled names, Mrs Shaw. Hostesses were Mesdames Hurdley and Charters.
PARNASSUS Mrs I. Wilkinson presided at a meeting of the Parnassus Women's Institute. The motto was "A house is no home unless it contains food for mind as well as body." A report on the conference held recently in Wellington was given by Mrs I. Wilkinson. Arrangements were completed for tne birthday party next month. Goods from the Returned Soldiers' Association were n Mrs I. Wilkinson and Mrs J. Hall were appointed delegates to the nauyearly meeting of the North Canterbury Federation. c „ ma Results of competitions were:—Something new from something old: Mrs i Wilkinson 1, Mrs Muncaster 2. Articles in match-box: Mrs Muncaster 1 Mrs 'Coe 2. Spring flowers: Mr«s *. Leaman 1, Mrs Coe 2. The golden thread talk was carried on by Mrs Muncaster, who spoke on "What we can do, with sealing-wax." WAIPARA Mrs F. Gainsford presided at the September meeting of the • Waipara Women's Institute. An entertainment was given consisting of a playette, a piano duet, community singing, and competitions. Mesdames F. Gainsford and M. Waterhouse were elected delegates to the North Canterbury Federation*meeting. Competition results were:—Cake. Mrs McLachlan 1, Mrs Quigley 2. Violets: Miss Gainsford 1, Mrs Topp 2. Flowers: Mrs Forsyth 1, Miss Symonds 2. Design Miss Riddell 1. Hostesses were: Mrs L. McGuckin, Miss P. McGuckin and Miss M. Laredo.
