KOWAI COUNTY COUNCIL

CLOSING OF GRASS ROAD There were present at the last meeting of the Kowai County Council, Crs. H. May (chairman), J. B. Bowker, J. Wyllie, M. I. Malthus, S. D. \L. Boyce, J. Ashworth, and T. ChamberIt was decided to call tenders for the cleaning of the outfall drain in the Leithfield drainage district, and tenders for the painting of two council cottages at Balcairn. Correspondence was received from the Canterbury Education Board requesting the council's permission to have the grass road closed between the Amberley Domain and school grounds. It was resolved to object to the closing of the road, as it is the only public access to the observatory, and the road is also utilised by the public using the Amberley Domain. A deptuation consisting of members of the Rangiora High School Board waited on" the council asking for a donation ' towards the building of a community hall at the High School in Rangiora. It was decided to give £5 towards the project. Cr. Ashworth and the clerk reported on attending the conference in Christehurch about the proposed Canterbury court at the centennial exhibition. The Kowai Council's allocation was about £3OO, which would include £ll 18s towards the compiling of the history of Canterbury. The clerk reported that no validating legislation had yet been brought down for grants to this project, and it was decided to hold the matter over in the meantime.

It was decided to allow the ranger more time to be given to patrolling the county roads in view of the recent complaints about straying stock. The financial statement showed:— Receipts since last meeting £P7 lis 3d, accounts for payment £335 3s sd, debit balance at bank £323 lis 6d,

GOLF FORMATION OF GLENMARK CLUB ! MEETING HELD AT WAIPARA A decision was made to form the Glenmark Golf Club at a recent meeting in the Waipara Hall. The membership expected is about 60, and it was decided to have the surveying of the grounds done immediately with a view to opening the season in the autumn. Mr W. S. Potton presided over a large attendance at the meeting, which received enthusiastic support from the Omihi and Waipara districts. The election of officers resulted: — Patron, the Rev. H. G. Hawkins; president, Mr R. C. Clifford; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. S. Potton, W.'H. Taylor, and B. L. Symonds; secretary, Mr M. Waterhouse; treasurer and captain, Mr C. McCaskey; vice-captain, Mr W. S. Potton; women's captain, Miss R. Symonds; women's vice-captain, Mrs L. F. Baker; committee, Mesdames L. F. Baker, A.' Cameron, C. McCaskey, H. Mu'nro, Misses' R. Symonds, J. Hamilton, Messrs A. Croft, A. McLachlan, J. Lockhead, F. G. Gainsford, A. Conway, A. Ferguson, and L. McGuckin. DUNSANDEL BOGEY MATCH A bogey match was played by the Dunsandel Golf Club on Saturday. Results were:—E. H. Tweedy, 3 up; W. Gardiner, 3 down; H. Cain, 4 down; S. Tweedy, 4 down. The results of the semi-finals of the championships were as follows:—W. Tweedy beat R. Wright, E. H. Tweedy beat B. W. Shipley. AMBERLEY LADIES* CLUB The bogey match played on Saturday by the Amberley Ladies' GolfClub resulted in a tie between Mrs W. Martyn and Mrs J. Schofield, with cards of 3 down. On the count back Mrs Schofield won. The stroke competition played by the juniors was won by Miss Fiona Shier. J HAWARDEN LADIES' CLUB In a stroke competition played by the Hawarden Ladies' Golf Club the best scores were:—Mrs F. Dalzell 72, Mrs N. Macfarlane 74, Mrs H. Patchett 75, Mrs F. Barker 76, Miss F. Jones 76, Miss G. Evans 80. The best junior scores were:—Mrs J. Pawsey 62, Mrs J. Beath 74, Miss E. Croft 76, Miss I. Croft 77, Mrs W. Parsonage 80. In a bogey round played on Saturday the scores were:—Mrs F. Dalzell 6 down, Miss N. Wright 7 down, Mrs F. Barker 8 down, Miss F. Jones 9 down. .'—.■„ In the junior division, Mrs Fraser was 4 down. LAWN TENNIS DUNSANDEL CLUB MEETS The annual meeting of the Dunsandel Tennis Club was held recently. The president (Mr F. E. Owers) presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr and Mrs John Walker and family and with Mr W. J. Wraight who had suffered bereavement. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £lO 19s 7d.

The following officers were elected: Patrons. Messrs D. Jones, John Walker Herring M.P.; president, Mr FEOwSir vice-presidents, Messrs James Walker, R. H. Johnston, H. F. Wright JH. Skinner,.H. W. Johnson, C R Hatchard, C A. Wright, and D. T Wraight; club captain, Mr W. J. Wraightf secretary and treasurer. Miss T. McGregor: general committee. Misses M. Walker, L. McGregor, and Mrs K Johnston,' Messrs M. E M. Watson, F. Tear, C. Johnson, and H. D. Johnston; delegates to Ellesmere Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs Watson and Tear. The season was opened on Saturday afternoon, when there was a good attendance. Visitors were present from Burnham, Southbridge, and Killinchy. OPENING OF UNITED BAYS CLUB The members of the United Bays Tennis Club held their opening day at the domain, Duvauchelle, on Saturday, when there was, a large gathering of members and friends. Visitors were also present from Pigeon Bay, Little River, and Akaroa. _ Mr C. Minnifie, club captain, declared the season open. SOCIAL AT SPRINGSTON SOUTH A social was held by the Springston South Hall Committee, at which cards, table tennis, and dancing were enjoyed. The card winners were Messrs G. Lassen and Bennett, and Mesdames J. R. Tyson and C. Woods. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss I. Powell and Mr R. Wright. Miss M. Riordan played the music, and Mr H. Hoskin I was master of ceremonies.
