REFUND OF RATES
REQUESTED
SHORTAGE OF WATER ON PROPERTY
A claim fiorn Mr J. Andrews, C.lcnavy, for a refund of water rates for periods of water shortage when the irrigation channel was tinder construction, was placed before the Waimate County Council yesterday by the secretary of the Lower Waihao Water Race Committee (Mr J. C. Hay). In a letter to the water race committee. Ci\ Andrews said that for two years his section was practically without water, and he had to drive his ewes and lsmbs a mile through paddocks to the river outlet to water the'in. As a result his lambs for two years were sold as stores, not fats. The water race committee, reported Mr Hay, did not recommend that a concession be granted The council agreed to advise Mr Andrews that it had no legal vight to grant any refund The chairman of the finance committee (Cr. A. S. Elworthy) reported that the balance at the bank m September. 1930, was £4238 3s 5d in debit, compared with a debit of £7631 10s 6d in 1937. The accounts presented to the meeting totalled £7134 18s lOd. The receipts since last meeting totalling £2836 16s 9d 'ncluded rates 1938-39, £139 12s; 1937-38, £26 ss; hospital and harbour rates £l2B Ids 2d, refund relief wages £1478 3s 6d, balance of rate subsidy £625, hire of plant £214 18s 7d. The Lower Waihao water race acI count, reported Cr. Elworthy, was £464 2s 7d in credit, compared with 1 a credit of £4BO 7s lid in September. | 1957. The accounts presented totalled £45 2s. and receipts since last meet- ! ing. £2 9s. . ■ I The report was approved. Discussing the engineer's report, Cr. I Elworthv said Casey's road was , private property, but the council had made a concession in offering to do the work if the applicants paid for it. On Cr. Johnstone's recommendation, it was decided to put the grader on to the Woolshed Gully road. Cr. Lindsay was deputed to interview Mr Foley about his appUcauon for a drain across Meyer's road, and to convey the council's offer to do the work if Mr Foley paid for the pipes. On Cr. Sinclair's motion it was decided to hold over the erection of a bridge to carry the school bus on the Greenhills road, as the bus route was not yet completed Cr. Sinclair said Mr Stewart s suggestion for the diversion of .flood waters above Gray's corner shoufti have been included in the Morven drainage scheme. The water flowed through the school grounds and scoured out the road. The P«>P«tyowners concerned were agreeable to the diversion. The engineer was asked to confer with the parties.
LAWN TENNIS
POPULARITY OF GAME AT GERALDINE CLUB'S CREDIT BALANCE INCREASED Tennis was popular last season and the courts were well patronised in spite of dull weather toward the end of the season, states the annual report of the Geraldine Tennis Club. The club's credit balance had been increased from £5 6s 6d to £l7 Is 2d as there was no court expenditure last season. It was regrettable, how- j ever, the report said, that there was [ £l3'l7s 6d outstanding in subscriptions for the season. Toward the end of the season the club lost the services of the secretary (Mr John Stewart), who was transferred to Christchurch, and members had wished him success. A B grade team had been entered in the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's competition, but because of the bad state of the* grass courts, players did not get many games. TECHNICAL OLD STUDENTS' CLUB Five new members were elected at the annual meeting of the Timayu Technical Old Students' Tennis Club over which Mr S. Chittock presided. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron. Mr F. L. N. Tuck; president. Mr S. Chittock; captain, Mr B. Cox; secretary, Miss O. Manning; committee. Misses V. Burrow and W Mackie and Mr J.
