In the search for oil in England a sound detector is being used, in which aluminium wire is an important factor. That in itself is not striking news, but the fact that the diameter of the aluminium wire used is only one ten-thousandth of an inch is indeed a remarkable instance of what man's ingenuity is capable of accomplishing. An idea of the microscopic fineness of the wire will be realised .when it is stated that 600 strands of the wire bulked together would be just equal to the diameter of a human hair. A piece of this wire, shown under a high power microscope, is exhibited in the Canadian pavilion at Glasgow Empire Exhibition.
