WAITER CHARGED
ALLEGED CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD REMAND GRANTED (PHESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, September 26. Charged that, between about September 25 and November 22, at Brisbane, with Francie Arthur Miller, Frederick Reginald Anderson and Leonard Edwards, he conspired to obtain money from Francis Albert Blucher by fraudulent means, Cyril Edward Smith, aged 30, a waiter, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., to-day. In asking for a remand for a week, Detective-Sergeant P. J. Doyle said he was doubtful if the police would be in a position to proceed, but they would be in a position to convey the real position to the Court. . Mr G. C. Kent, appearing for Smith, applied for bail. He said that Smith was anxious to return to Brisbane to clear up the charge. If in the meantime he could have his freedom, it would assist him in his defence. He was first seen by detectives fou r months ago in connexion with the charge, and since then had remained at the same a<klress. If he had intended to abscond, it was submitted that he would have taken slops to do so long before. - Detective-Sergeant Doyle said the accused was traced as a Result of the activities of Detective W. Ritchie. After that, the Brisbane police were communicated with, and they sent a cablegram of instruction to issue proceedings and to obtain a provisional warrant. The amount involved was £BOOO. Any little delay that _ might have occurred was caused by the police on the other side having difficulty in tracing the other persons menU was granted, bail being fixed at £3OO, with two sureties of £l5O. __ -
