THE GOVERNMENT

*0 >JH W>ITO» O* THE PRESS. Sir,— The letter in Saturday's issue by "S," an avowed past supporter of Labour for 20 years, goes to show that the actions of the present Labour Government have had a far-reaching effect on the spending power of the wage earner and Labour voter. These have at last discovered that the promises of the Labour Government to prevent rising costs affecting their new rise m wages were nothing-: but camouflage; and the wonderful rise in screw now looks very small rafter tne weekly bills have been paid. ,- -.-' We have' been told that unemployment in New Zealand is now practically nil; but the levy oh wages still goes on. .What for? The worker is now looking,. at what is left of-his ■big rise in screw, arid thinking "hard of the further bob in the pound which'he Will have to part out for 40 long years, if he has just received, a vote, in order to receive the munificent sum of 30s a week when he is too old to be able to work. -,„,., We all know the.feelings of I'S.,". regarding Mi" D. G. Sullivan's statement that costs have only risen 13 per cent, and we know by experiericethe actual rise, much to our cost.;- It had .to happen, despite all promises of those hunting for power. The only pity is that so many voters- believed, iri such simple-minded fashion, that r those promises would'be rigidly- adhered to after the elections. The result will be apparent when the ballot-boxes yawn before us once more. The , saying. "Give a man-enough rope and he'll hang himself," will-be found to be trup when the past actions of the Government are remembered on election day. —Yours, etc., '
