RACING AND TROTTING

PETERSHAM WINS

GERALDINE RACES CONCLUDED

COCKSURE AND TOP RANK AGAIN SUCCESSFUL

The Geraldine Racing Club's annual meeting was concluded on the Orari racecourse on Saturday in ideal conditions, and the attendance was the largest for many years. The track was in fast order, and again the racing was full of interest, several close finishes reflecting credit on the club's handicapper. Mr F. C. Thomas, and on the work of the starter. Mr P. D. Mac Nab, who officiated in the absence of Mr A. J. Hastings at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting. Speculation was brisk throughout, the sum of £14.280 10s being handled, as against £10.664 on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £23.681. compared with £19.649 10s at last vear's meeting, an increase of £4211 10s. This was the first year the win and place system was adopted, and although there appeared to be some delav in balancing, the totalisator before each race, the results must have been gratifying to those members of the committee who advocated the change from the single pool system. The principal event, the Presidents Handicap, was won by Petersham, who has been racing fairly consistently without winning for some weeks. Last Refrain, who improved on recent showings, was a close second, and the runner-up in the Geraldine Cup, Wine Card, was a good third. Cocksure again won the open sprint event, and Top Ranl> completed his dual success at the meeting by winning the hurdle race. Recollection, improved by his first day's effort, narrowly beat Gironde in the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, recording a popular win for his North Canterbury owner, Mr W. Parsons.

Kilrobe, a sister to Rousseau, and like him, bred by Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane, 'of North Canterbury, created a good impression bv her winning effort in the Gladstone Hack Handicap, and in a thrilling struggle in the Wainui Hack-Handicap, Auctor secured a very narrow verdict from the Austrahan- <- bred Comus. s Details of the racing are as follows: s SECOND HURDLES, I Of £135; second horse £2O, and third £ horse £ls from stake. The Sandwichman and Sir Rbsenor carried on as pacemakers for a mile when the latter retired and Top Rank joined The Sandwichman in front. This pair raced abreast over the last fence, with Mount Val and Delrain closing up. Top Rank soon shook off The Sandwichman in the run home, and although he had a short length only to spare at the post, he was never in danger of being overhauled. Mount Val finished fast from the last fence to wear down Sandwichman for second money. Delrain was four lengths away arid there was another gap to Chaste, Contract, and Sunny Comet, with Hostile and Sir Rosenor tailed off.

Top Rank again showed ' his superiority once he was called on to run up to the leaders. He has become very solid and will go on winning. Mount Val ran one of his periodical good races, and naturally was not in much demand. The Sandwichman again did. not jump cleanly," otherwise he •would have been more dangerous.. Delrain did not show much improvement. Sunny i Comet and Hostile made poor showings. Sir Rosenor jumped well while he lasted. Contract gave trouble at the start and when the field was sent off, he stood on the mark, and gave the field half a furlong start before he was persuaded to move off. He .made up a good deal of the leeway, but 1 was never in a likely position, _...

A Narrow Verdict Investors correctly summed up the field for the Wainui Handicap, the three best supported filling the places. Freecourse, All Parade,' .Auctor and Chirp were slow to move off, and the first to show out were Nigella and Jedburgh, who raced abreast to the straight entrance from Sheeny, Sportsman, Auctor and Comus. The leaders weakened a furlong from the post and Auctor and Comus drew up to Sheeny. A thrilling finish ensued between Auctor and Comus, and the former secured a narrow verdict. Sheeny was a close third, two lengths in front of Jedburgh and Nigella. Auctor has been a long time opening* his winning account, his record, last season including six second placings. Comus ran another solid race, and is a much improved galloper. Sheeny is also due for her first win. Nigella again showed speed, but was in trouble soon after entering the straight. Petersham's Handicap Ponty was solidly supported to win the President's Handicap, but getting away well, he drifted to the rear early and never showed any signs of improving his position. From an excellent start Petersham and- Travenna were the first out, but going into the back stretch, Travenna was in front from Silver Slipper, Last Refrain, Petersham, Wine Card, Supreme Court, Rabble, Ponty, and Argentic. Travenna was done with at. the home turn and Silver Slipper was momentarily in charge from Last Refrain, but once the straight was reached. Last Refrain showed out from Petersham, .Wine Card and Silver Slipper, Last Refrain was under pressure at the distance and Petersham, soon getting his measure, gradually drew away to record an impressive victory. Wine Card finished resolutely to get to within half a length of Last Refrain. Rabble was two lengths back/a length in front of Silver Slipper, with Travenna, Argentic, Supreme Court, and Ponty following in that order. Petersham had'a well deserved win,; as hehas been racing prominently this .season. Last Refrain showed expected improvement, but was no match for the winner. Wine Card put up another stubborn fight, but found her weight too much. Rabble drew attention to his later prospects by a useful effort, but none of the others impressed.

Success Gentlemlh Joe gave an outstanding performance to win the Domain as he did not go off correctly and was well back with half a mile covered. He then made a fast run and was soon in a handy position behind the "leaders Devotion, Anna Wong, and Fragment. < Continuing his forward, move he ran into, second place to.Devotion turning for home, and quickly going to the front, was never in danger. Marfax stayed on to gain second money from the faster finishing Silk King, who was two lengths in front of Fragment, with Marque and Devotion next. Anna Wong broke up at the straight entrance, when she looked a'likely, place-getter. -

Kilrobe Stays On The Gladstone Hack Handicap resulted in a close tussle. Financiere, Boswell, Gipsy Fair, and Elmarch carried on in front to the home turn, and; there was not much between these entering the straight, with Teak in close attendance. Elmarch had charge a furlong from home from Boswell and Financiere, and Kilrobe later joined them. Elmarch appeared to be the winner noaring the post, but Kilrobe, with a telling effort, got up to beat him on the post. Boswell was a close third, two lengths in front of Passaform, with Lady Sincere, Dracula, Financiere, Garonne,, and Potent following in that order. . '- Kilrobe was well ridden by the Riccarton apprentice A. Stokes, who enjoyed his first win. She reeled off. two fast half-mile sprints last week and these no doubt caused her to be favourite. Elmarch narrowly missed returning a sensational win dividend. Boswell, by Balboa from Celerity 11, was always in a forward position, Financiere went well while she lasted. Garonne got out well but did not carry on very far. Another Double Winner ' Cocksure justified his short-priced favouritism for the Stewards' Stakes by another impressive win. Alby was badly left, and when, r the field had gone a furlong Valmarch streaked to the front and had a three lengths'^lead turning for home from Ballad, Cocksure, Silver Sail, and Second Innings. Valmarch was going freely at the distance but then commenced to weaken, and Cocksure did not have much

trouble in passing him to carry on for a clear-cut victory. Second Innings came with a late but solid run to snatch second place from Valmarch in the last stride. Land Raid was three lengths back in front of Ballad, Metal Bird, and Rebel Star. Cocksure's chance did not look very promising when Valmarch had a substantial lead from him turning for home, but he outclassed him in the last half. Second Innings suilercd a check rounding the home turn and did not get a clear run until well into the straight. He then put in some brilliant work to get up to beat the tiring Valmarch. Land Raid ran a fair race without ever being dangerous. Favourite Beaten Oasis, a staunch favourite for the Winchester Trot, made a game attempt to win but failed at the end. Eddystone, Myrna Loy, and Cyrano were the .early leaders, but with half the journey covered Myrna Loy was clear of Cyrano, Orby Lad, Eddystone, Oasis, and Master Potts. Myrna Loy retired as soon as the straight was reached, and Oasis, Master Potts, and Stamboul showed out. Oasis had just beaten off Master Potts when Stamboul flashed up wide out to get lip for a half-length verdict from Oasis, who was a similar distance in front of Master Potts. Myrna Loy was three lengths away in front of Eddystone and Orby Lad.

A Stern Struggle

Recollection was selected as first choice for the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, and he carried his supporters through, but only after a stubborn finish with Gironde. Both were unfavourably placed over the, first five furlongs, and were well away from the leaders, Robant, Glcnacre, Night Hawk, and Gold Boy, turning for home. Gironde at this stage made a fast forward move and was first to enter the straight with Recollection following him. This pair drew right away to fight out a long struggle. Gironde had a slight advantage a few strides from the post, but Recollection stayed on the belter to gain -jf head verdict. Robant was a fair third, two lengths in front of Night Hawk, who was followed by Great Bramble, Gold Boy, and Glenacre. Recollection appeared to be hemmed in when he tried to make a run Hearing the straight, and had to cover some extra ground to get clear. Gironde. lost second place early when Glenacre came back on to him and was checked again later. He was then hurried to the front round the long home bend, and such tactics undoubtedly had ; their effect on him in the final tussled Robant again made a bold showing. Night Hawk was confidently supported, but after showing promise to the straight entrance he weakened badly. Glenacre stopped early in the run home. Screamer and Great Bramble- were- never likely. Recollection gave G. Humphries his third win for the day and his sixth for the meeting.

Maiden Performers Namara had an easy win in the Maiden Race. • He got out well and, occupying third place in the running to the straight behind Fiancee and 'Sporting Luck, he moved forward" and went right away. Hagen was the first to begin, but he did not hold his place, and Titter and Eurotas, who had drawn the outside positions, came well into the picture on the home turn, but they were not able to go on with it, and Mawai ran on for second, while Hagen finished on to beat Eurotas for third. Then came Twilight Song, Titter, Sporting Luck, Fiancee, and Travail. Namara won well, and handled the soft going better than most of his opponents. Ilagcn ran very green, but he will improve, as also should Titter. Two-year-olds Miss Leighon got out clear at the start of the Juvenile Handicap, while Beau Vite and Leighon Rei 'failed to go off. Miss Leighon led Deflation, Siglow, Authoress, Tableau, and Vascones te the turn, where Vascones went up fast on the outer. Military Maid also improved her position round the turn. Miss Leighon led into the straight from Deflation and Vascones, but the two leaders soon dropped out and Vascones took charge. Military Maid and Tableau then challenged, and Military Maid ran on for a decisive win, with Tableau just failing to reach Vascones. Portal, Authoress, Siglow, and Miss Leighon were next. The race was robbed of a lot of its interest by the failure of Beau Vite to take any part. The winner ran unplaced at Wanganui, and although she won- well she is very forward, and the form was not impressive. Favourites Beaten Backers of the Enthcos-Prlncess Isabel bracket in the hurdles were on the wrong way, as neither was ever likely, and the winner turned . up in the other stable representative, Erebus, who came along at. the finish and beat an outsider in Strolling. Lifeguard set a very fast pace, being well clear for six furlongs, but the field then closed on him, and after a brief spell in the lead by Royal Record, Strolling went out clear. He was joined by Erebus entering the straight, and they soon had the issue between them, Erebus finishing on the stronger and winning decisively. Taillight finished fast for third money. It was the winner's second start over fences. He fell at Wanganui. The Sprinters Dark Eagle, the favourite for the Tutaenui Hack Handicap, was one of the last to leave the mark and was never a possibility, though he finished well. Screen Star led all the way and held on to win fairly comfortably. He had as his nearest attendants Red Cat, Trobor, Dainty Sue, Captain Trcville, and Dainty jSheila, but Trebor was the only, one likely to give him any trouble at the end, and he easily held him oif. Rustem finished fast but failed to reach Red Cat for third, and the bunch was headed by Dainty Sheila, Dark Eagle, Sporting Gift, Dainty Sue, Informer, and Le Touquet. Screen Star has improved and won well. Trebor is also on the improve. The big field hampered several of the runners. Over Country The Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase proved a good thing for Annoyer. He went to the front early and, although sore, he never looked like losing. Lactose and Black Man challenged him over the concluding stages, but Annoyer held- his own and Black Man weakened in the final pinch. The rest were well beaten. Sir Acre fell and Booklaw ran off.
