LAWN TENNIS OPENING OF SEASON AT RANGIORA i ' „ j GOOD STANDARD MAINTAINED ON FIRST MV Interest in the prospects of tennis for the 1938-39 season at Rangiora was shown on Saturday, when .fully 70 members and visitors attended the opening of the Rangiora Lawn Tennis Club. The day was' fine and sunny, and the courts and grounds looked their best. After the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr Ci W Tyler) had given an address, in which he congratulated the club on the general appearance o£ the grounds, and wished members another successful season, the president of the club (Mr A. C. Fraser) declared the season opened. Mr Fraser also welcomed the visitors, among whom were representatives from the Oxford, United, Cust, West Eyreton, and Balcairn clubs. , , ', i- j • From the standard of play reached in doubles matches during the afternoon the Rangiora Lawn Tennis Club should be able to maintain its reputation for producing good tournament tennis. All the matches were evenly contested, particularly in the women's sets, and there were some excellent rallies, not only in ground shots but also in net duels For the first day of play of the-season the standard of tennis was remarkably good. OPENING OF KAIAPOI CLUB The Kaiapoi Tennis Club opened its season on the Darnley square courts on Saturday in fine weather. There was a large attendance of" members am! visitors. ~„ _ ~, ~ . The president (Mr W. R. Wylie) welcomed all present, and asked the Mayor (the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery) to declare the courts open. . The Mayor congratulated club members oji their enthusiasm and wished them a successful season. An exhibition game given by four Christchurch players, C. Angas, C. F. Penfold, I. J. Corich,. and H. A. Barnett. was watched with interest, and later those present took part in mixed doubles. Visitors and the guesta of the president <MrR. W. Wylie), the vice-president (Mr A. The women's hockey match for the Mcintosh Shield, which was to have been played between Ranglora and Kaiapol on Saturday, was won by Rangiora by default.

To celebrate the coming-of-age of Mr Basil Jeffries, of Rangiora, a, successful social and dance were held in the Oddfellows' Hall, at Rangiora, on Saturday evening. Mr Jeffries received many useful and attractive gifts, among them being a gold key, presented by his .mother. Included in the evening's programme were games and competitions. Songs were sung by Mrs H. B. Clark. For the dance. Miss D. Brady played the music. Novelty dances were won as follows:—Monte Carlo, Mrs Clark and Mr C. W. The Springston Hall was crowded when the members of the Prebbleton Institute • Group held their drama festival. Mrs Millar, group convener, presided. The stage was decorated. Because" of sickness, only three institutes were able to compete, plays being given by members from Templeton, Springston, and Lincoln. Mrs G. Maginness (Sockburn) was judge and awarded the following placings:—Templeton 1, Lincoln 2, Springston 3. ABOUT SIXTY MEMBERS EXPECTED

A meeting was recently held in the Waipara Hall to form a golf club. Mr W. S. Potton presided over a large at- 1 tendance. The meeting received the enthusiastic support of the Omihi and Waipara districts. It was unanimously decided to form the Glenmark Golf Club, with an anticipated membership of about 60.

The election of officers resulted:— Patron, the Rev. H. G. Hawkins; president, Mr R. C. Clifford; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. S. Potton, W. H. Taylor, and B. L. Symonds; secretary, Mr M. Waterhouse; treasurer and captain, Mr C. McCaskey; vice-captain, Mr W. S. Potton; women's captain, Miss R. Symonds; women's vice-captain, Mrs L. F. Baker; committee, Mesdames L. F. Baker, A. Cameron, C. McCaskey, H. Munro, Misses R. Symonds, J. Hamilton, Messrs A. Croft, A. McLachlan, J. Lockhead, F. G. Galnsford, A. Conway, A. Ferguson, and L. McGuckin. It was decided to have the surveying of grounds done immediately, with a view to opening the season in the autumn.

FLOWER SHOW AT KAIKOURA

WOMEN'S DIVISION OF THE FARMERS* UNION

The Kaikoura branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union held the sixth annual spring flower show in the Drill Hall. There was an excellent attendance, and some splendid blooms were exhibited. Mr G. Lewis, Christchurch, was the judge. Mrs N. C. Lee, the secretary, and the following helpers were the chief organisers for the show: Mesdames P. Burgcyne, F. S. Rutherford, T. Lane. G. G. Newton, A. B. Clark, Mr« W. Hopkins was assistant secretary, and the Rev. S. Corney was a steward. The afternoon tearooms were under the management of Mrs F. J. Monk, agisted by members of the division. The champion trumpei bloom in the show was exhibited by Mist R. Bullen. and the champion bloom other than t.-umpet was shown by Mrs A. S. Robinson. OBITUARY ;MR AUGUST MEYERS ■ -i - «____ Mr August Meyers, of Coopers Creek, Oxford, who died recently at the age of 82, spent almost the whole of his life in Canterbury. > Born in London in 185 G. Mr Meyers tame to New Zealand with his parents in the Regina in 1859, and his home! for several years was at Southbrook. He spent many years in contract work of various kinds, such as road-making, railway construction, and bush work. On leaving Little River, where he resided, for several years, he was presented by the citizens there with an inscribed watch and gold chain. Mr Meyers came to the Oxford district 38 years ago, where he farmed successfully till his death. He took a great interest' in public affairs, not only in the activities of his immediate neighbourhood, but also being particularly active in the county. He was a member of the Oxford Road Board, and later for several years of the county council, of which he was chairman for three years. He was a foundation member of the Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and was president in 1920. He was also a foundation member of the Tawera Masonic Lodge. - Mr Meyers married a daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Marsh. Hi* wife died 21 years ago. He leaves a family of five—Messrs L. E. Meyers and R. P. Meyers, of Oxford, Mrs W. F. Reynolds, of Gore, Mrs F. A. Evans, of Hawera, and Mrs H. J. Francis, of Christchurch. A son, Oliver August Meyers, who served in the Great War, died in 1918. There are 17 grandchildren.

The funeral, which took place at the Oxford Cemetery, was largely attended. The Rev. Mr Powell conducted the service, and the Masonic service was read by Wor. Bro. L. Watson. The bearers were Messrs W. Virtue, W. Fenwick, H. Feary, K. D. Henderson, R. J. Sharpe, and H. J. Francis.

NATIONAL PARTY ADDRESS TO WOMEN AT CHEVIOT ■ Mrs W. Mackay, the women's organiser of the National Party, gave an address to a large gathering in the Cheviot Public Hall recently. Mrs D. H. G. Bush presided. The speaker had an attentive hearing, and was given a vote of thanks. GIFT AFTERNOON AT. WAIPARA A gift afternoon, organised by the Waipara Women's Institute, for Mrs W. Thomson, was held recently. Items were given by Mrs E. J. Blake, Misses Sylvia Forsyth, and Nolene Hare. A guessing competition was won by Mrs Uren, and Mrs A. McLachlan. Mrs Gainsford presented Mrs Thomson with many gifts. Miss M. Horlor, who has been secretary of the institute and is leaving the district, was presented with a hanging mirror. MEETING OF COURTENAY PARISHIONERS A meeting of Courtenay Anglican parishioners was held at St. Matthew's vicarage recently. The Rev. W. H. Si Hine presided. Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Mrs N. Smith and with Mr and Mrs G. Begg in their recent bereavement. It was decided to hold the annual Christmas fair on December 3. Mr E. H. Wilde was appointed honorary secretary. ' -
