STOCK DISEASES
RESEARCH WORK DESIRED CRITICISM BY FARMERS ON WEST COAST ITHK PUSS SpcclAl Service.! GREYMOUTH, September 24. "So vital is the inatter that I cannot understand why intensive research into diseases of stock has been overlooked. Instead of that being attended to, we get an army of inspectors going about telling us how to run our farms," said Mr H. G. Carter, of Ngahere, at the quarterly meeting of the West Coast provincial district of the New Zealand Farmers'' Union, held today at Greymouth. "Too much has been nude of farm inspection," Mr Carter said, "and it would be far better for. the nation if roammitis, sterility of cows, and tuberculosis, and allied diseases, were attended to. If a small levy had to be placed on farmers for that purpose, I think farmers would be benefited. At present, this question, which is of national scope and importance, is com= pletely * ignored." "I agree with Mr Carter," said the president (Mr W. E. Norton), "for I think that pasture is miles ahead of husbandry, in.New.Zealand. Animal research should be undertaken.". . The discussion arose from a remit forwarded, by the Barrytown branch, which sought an investigation into the possibility of insuring against loss .of stock because of tuberculosis. It was explained that the New Zealand Union was acting in the matter, and the remit was withdrawn.
