MAGISTRATE'S COURT
SATURDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) FALSE REPRESENTATION Harold Carl William Duffy, aged 23, a labourer, of Leithfield, pleaded guilty to a charge that on September 11, at Christchurch, he was deemed to be a rogue and a vagabond, in that he imposed on Cecil William Lilleyman by falsely representing that he was a purchaser of a car advertised by Lilleyman, and obtained benefit from such representation. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop said that the circumstances of the case were somewhat peculiar. Duffy saw an advertisement of a car for sale in a paper on September 10. and on the following day he decided to go and make representations to Lilleyman that he intended to purchase the car. He went to Lilleyman's and signed an agreement to buy the car. He really wanted the car for joy-riding, and when he left Lilleyman's he gave a fictitious address. The case had been brought because he did not want this sort of thing to become established, said Chief-Detective Dunlop. Duffy said that he now realised the foolishness of his act, and stated that it had been done while he was in a depressed state.
The Magistrate imposed a fine of £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment, the defendant being allowed one month in which to pay the fine.
