The Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) arrived in Christchurch by the steamer express yesterday morning and later made a passingout inspection of the third course of pilot officers at the Flying Training School at "Wigram aerodrome. The Minister left for Dunedin by air yesterday afternoon, and will remain there until after the General Election, unless developments in the international situation necessitate his return to Wellington. The Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam • Hamilton) was a passenger from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning. He gave a public address in Christchurch last night. Mr John Montgomery, managing director of the Christchurch Press Company Ltd., who has been attending a meeting in Wellington of the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors Association, returned to Christchurch yesterday morning. A decision to record appreciation of excellent work done by Mr S. A. C. Darby, formerly Conservator of Forests for Westland, who has been transferred to Palmerston North, was made at a meeting of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board yesterday. Special reference was made to his work, on the grounds committee. Mr F. W. Foster, who was recently appointed Conservator of Forests for Westland, took his seat on the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board yesterday and was extended a welcome by the chairman (Mr N. C. Kensington). The appointment of Constable A. C. Osborne, Messrs J. Evans, J. Graham, and A. Jackson, of Arthur’s Pass, as honorary rangers to the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board was confirmed at a meeting of the board yesterday. Sir Charles, Norwood was among the passengers from the north yesterday morning. Group Captain the Hon. R. Ao Cochrane, Chief of the Air Staff, arrived in Christchurch from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning for the passing-out of pilot officers at the Flying Training School at Wigram. Flight Lieutenant A. G. Lester was also a visitor to Christchurch for the function at the aerodrome. Sir Cecil Leys, of Auckland, was among the passengers from the North Island yesterday morning. Professor H. G. Denham, of Canterbury University College, returned, to ..Christchurch by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr G. McNamara, Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr J. P. E. Veale, clerk to the Heathcote County Cuncil, left for Wellington last night on county business. He will return to Christchurch on Wednesday morning. Flight Lieutenant J. Guthridge; assistaptController of Civil Aviation, and Mr E. F. Carperiter, - Chief Inspector of Aircraft, passed through Christchurch yesterday on their return to Wellington from Dunedin and Invercargill. They travelled by air. Messrs C. P. Agar, C. J. Talbot, and B. Whitcombe were among the passengers to arrive from the north yesterday morning. Mr F. R. Picot, Director of Internal Marketing, is visiting Christchurch. He arrived from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr F. H. Walls, advertising manager of the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd., returned to Christchurch yesterday morning from Wellington, where he attended a meeting of the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. Regret at the death of Archbishop Julius was expressed at yesterday morning’s meeting of the Canterbury Education Board, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives. The chairman (Mr G. W. Armitage) said that Archbishop Julius had been warden of Christ’s College for many years and knew the path along which, education should go. A motion of sympathy with Mr F. W. Johnston, a former president of the union, in the recent death of his wife was passed at the annual meeting of the South Island Motor Union yesterday. Mr W. R. Carey, of Christchurch, was unanimously appointed president of the South Island Motor Union at the annual meeting yesterday. Appreciation of the services of the retiring president (Dr. S. A. Gibbs, of Nelson), not only in his year of office, but over many years of activity in motoring organisations was recorded in the minutes. - ’
