SPORTS IN THE CITY
♦ FINAL RUGBY MATCH TO-DAY SUMMER ATHLETICS OPEN , To-day’s sports programme in the city includes the concluding fixtures of several winter sports and the beginning of summer athletics. After a period of fine weather sports grounds are in excellent order. The Rugby match between Canterbury and Wellington at Lancaster Park will be the final representative match of the season. The game will be preceded by the annual match between the referees of Canterbury and Ashburton. Another interesting fixture at Lancaster Park will be the match between the teams representing the Christchurch and Wellington Post and Telegraph Departments. ’ For Rugby League enthusiasts interest will centre in the Vivian Cup final between Hornby and Sydenham at Hornby. The Thacker Shield will be at stake in the game, at Monica Park between , Waratah (Reefton) and Addington. In the semi-finals of the English Cup Association football competition Western and Thistle will meet at English Park and St. Albans and Technical will meet at Hagley Park. The team from H.M.S. Achilles will meet Nomads in a curtain-raiser at English Park. > The Athletic season will begin, as usual, with the Canterbury College Club’s spring meeting, which will be held on the Hagley Park oval.
