WEATHER HELPS FARMING CROPS AND STOCK IN EXCELLENT CONDITION EFFECT OF A WEEK OF SUNSHINE ■ An impetus • to practically every branch of farming in North Canterbury has been given by the fine weather in the last week. A noticeable improvement is seen in pastures and cereal crops, and stock are reported to be in excellent condition. The sowing of rape and turnips is proceeding and farmers generally express satisfaction with the response of the soil to the warmth and sunshine. Considerable quantities of barley have been sown in those areas thought unsuitable for the late sowing of wheat. Several growers yesterday said that they decided on laying down acreages of barley because they considered the risk of sowing wheat at this time of the year was too great: bad weather had retarded late sowing, and, especially on medium land, the chances of obtaining a good har.vest from late sown wheat were so unlikely that to put down barley was a comparatively safe proposition Lucerne crops are in good condition and will be a valuable supplement to the green feed for stock. Lucerne is much needed for early feed this year as in a number of areas the turnips and green feed were too saturated by the bad weather a few weeks ago to be of great benefit to stock. At Swannanoa and Fernside the ground is being prepared for the sowing of lucerne. With the appearance of white butterflies in the district it is probable that acreages of rape may suffer to some extent. Commenting on the likelihood of this happening one farmer suggested that if growers put down a paddock of Italian ryegrass with a sprinkling of oats there would at least be a chance of counteracting the effect of the pest. Losses from white butterflies attacking rapo could be controlled, he said, if this method were adopted, as the ryegrass and oat crop would be a suitable substitute for rape and would be quite palatable for stock. RANGIORA DENTAL CLINIC EXTENSION LIKELY TO BE MADE NEXT YEAR An extension to the Bangiora District School dental clinic may be made early next year, according to Mr J. O. Webber (headmaster of the school). Mr Webber was commenting on a statement reported to have been made by the Minister for Education (the Hon. : P. Fraser) that ’ a • . largely increased number of nurses was being trained, for the extension, of the school dental clinic system. , - It was possible, Mr Webber added, ; that another nurse would be appointed to the clinic to assist Nurse F. M. Turner, when the extension was made. The new nurse would probablv be employed part-time at the Bangiora District School and part time at Amberley. OBITUARY MR D. G. MAINDONALD Mr D. G.
