( The complete work gives a conspectus ,of the life of Rome from its birth to its disintegration; the second volume., now issued, begins with the murder of Julius and ends with- the fall of the Western Empire in 476. Ancient writers are freely and well used in translation. The general treatment is broad and humane; there is a* warm current of sympathy throughout; the problems discussed are shown in relationship to modern life; and the reader feels that the Empire Teally lived. This is a clear and brightly written survey.
