RACING AND TROTTING
PINK ROBE WINS SUCCESSES FOR COCKSURE AND NIGHT DRESS OPENING OF GERALDINE MEETING The Geraldine Racing Club was favoured with ideal weather for the opening of its annual race meeting on the Orari racecourse yesterday, and the attendance for a mid-week day was the largest for some years past. The course was in hard order, and some keen racing was produced, some of the finishes being very close. The Bum of £9400 10s (win £4249, place £5151 10s) was handled, as against £BBOS 10s under the single pool in use at last year’s meeting, an increase of £595. The Geraldine Cup was won by Pink Robe, formerly trained at Riccarton, but now at Wingatui, after a hard struggle with Wine Card, who fought out a hard finish in the gamest manner. After the race, a silver cup was handed to H. Anderton, trainer of Pink Robe, in the absence of the owner. Mr A. Ferguson of Dunedin, ty Mrs B. R. Macdonald, wife of the club’s patron. There was another close finish in the Squatters’ Handicap, the favourite. Cocksure, getting up in the last stride to take the honours from Nightcalm, with the veteran Silver Streak close up. Night Dress carried on the good work he initiated at Ashburton by winning the Belfleld Hack Handicap in a meritorious manner, and Gay Parade, also a winner at Ashburton, and another of Nightmarch’s progeny, advanced a further stage by beating some good hacks in the Raukapuka Handicap. Romarin put her name on the winning list for the first time by leading the field home in the Ohapi Hack Handicap. She was bred by her owner, Mr L. W. Storry, who has been a valuable supporter of racing for some time past without figuring prominently in the winning list. NOTES ON THE RACING : i . ! Top Rank W-ns ■ The Sandwichman was sgnt out a much ’better favourite than Top. Rank for the First Hurdles, but after being the early leader, he surrendered his place to Top Rank with a go. Top Rank had a commanding lead entering the straight from Delrain, The Sandwichman, Contract, and Mount Val, all in close order. Top Rank carried on for a convincing win and in a hard struggle for second honours Contract got up in the last few strides to beat Delrain, who was a neck in front of the favourite, with Mount Val close up. Hostile fell at the first fence,' and Chaste lost bis rider half a mile from home. Top Rank gave a faultless display and outclassed the field over the last halfmile- Contract did his best : work; in the. straight,, and -would have given the winner some trouble with a little further ' td ( go. Delrain 'made ‘twoefforts to get through, op, the rails' in the first six furlongs, but was disappointed. and lost valuable, ground on both . occasions. The ‘Sandwichman jumped badly, . arid, hitting the: first few fences hard appeared-to take a lot put of him. His display was: certainly a lqng ,W,ay.below that at’Ashbiurton. Mount. Val made another disappointing showing. ■ Roruarin’s First ' Success ; The Ohapi Handicap was won in. an attractive manner by Romarin, who went to the front with Nigella at the end of a furlong,. and thjs pair had charge at' the straight entrance from Royal Refrain. , Comus, Remembo, arid Romarin drew away commencing the run home, and Although Romarin had only half a length to spare at the post, she had more in hand than the others. Comus finished better than .Roiyal Refrain to, gain second money from him in the last stride. Sheeny was a close. fourth in front of Jed--burgh. La Plata, and .Nigella, together . next. Eoyal Refrain crossed his legs just after passing the post and fell. His rider, L. J. Ellis suffered a fracture of the skull, and was removed to tiie Timaru Hospital. Romarin’s win was in keeping with her >recpnt improving form, and also with her breeding, as she is from tne well-known galloper . of her day. Limelight. Comus ’ran a very solid race, and his first winning turn should now come. The favourite, Nigella, went out wide entering the straight and was not again-in evidence. A Narrow Margin •Ponty was the only withdrawal front the Geraldine cup, and in a good betting race, Lazybones was selected as first choice, but was always well back, and at no - stage showed any promise of getting near the leaders. Alma, Travenna. Pink Robe, Dunstan, and Silver Slipper were prominent over the first furlong, and going into the back stretch Pink Robe took charge from Alma,, Silver Slipper, Petersljam, Wine Card, Travenna, Dunstan, and Last Refrain, all well bunched. Petersham and Wine Card ran up to Pink Robe roundi.'g the top and followed her into the straight, with Silver Slipper, Alma, and .Last Refrain, next. Wine Sard drew up to Pink Robe early in 'he run home, with Petersham also challenging, and the first-named pair had a long struggle to the post. Wine Card looked at one stage as if she woula outstay Pink Robe,, but the latter hung on to her advantage and gained a verj narrow verdict. Petersham was a good third, two lengths in front jf Last Refrain, with Mungatoon, Travenna, and Lazybones next. Pink Robe had a well-deserved win, as she had to make her own pace until Wine Card tackled her. She was well handled by A. Powell, a small Wingatui apprentice, who had his first win. Wine Card once again showed what a game little mare she is. Sue was no doubt at some disadvantage owing to her rider, A. Parsons, being kicked by Milford when parading -• the barrier. Parsons had ,to receive treatment before being e.ble to remount. Petersham was well placed throughout, but could not see the ordeai through. Last Refrain carried 41b overweight owing i to L. J. Ellis net being able to ride him, and he ran a sound race without being actually prominertt. Dunstan disappointed, as he was in trouble after going about six furlongs. Mungatoon was one of the rear division for mos* of the way. the others being Lazybones, Made Money, : and Balmenter. A Bunched Finish The Geraldine Trot resulted in a spectacular finish. The favourite, Tinker, tried to win from end to end. and when he was still in charge well down the straight his prospects looked bright, but he weakened near the end : and was beaten into third place. Tinker was followed into the straight by Audo Girl, Mongolian, Sterling Pointer. Dancing Pirate. Devotion. Super Jack, and Gentleman Joe. Tinker was under pressure 100 yards ' from the post. Dancing Pirate ran past him and Gentleman Joe came with a I late run. In an exciting finish Dancing Pirate won by a length from I Gentleman ’Joer who just got up to beat Tinker; Sterling Pointer, brac-
keted with the winner,’ was close up next, just, in- front of a bunch, which included ’ Mongolian and Grand Slam. Manawai, Sure Potts, and Warwick failed to go off Correctly. Impressive Performance Gay Parade, who was rehandicapped 101b in the Raukapuka Hack Handicap for his win in the Novice Stakes at Ashburton, justified his staunch favouritism by another easy victory. When the field had settled down, Gipsy Fair had charge from Gay Parade. Maori Maid, Garonne. Dracula. and Potent, but as soon as the straight was reached Gay Parade went to the front and had the race won a furlong from the post. Dracula. who . followed him into the straight, stayed on for a comfortable seconpl placing, while Gironde came from well back to secure third money from Potent. Maori Maid, Lady Sincere,-Gipsy; Fair, and Ilithyia followed in that order. ‘
Gay Parade did not leave the issue in doubt once he took charge* Dracula ran another solid race, and should soon go one better. Gironde got away well, but was sent back at two furlongs, apd only had Ilithyia and Bit 9’ Blue behind him for the next three furlongs. His third placing thus had a good deal of merit. Potent showed improvement. Maori Maid was actually the last to find her feet, but reeled off a fast run going into the back to be soon up with the leaders. That effort had its effect when the final stages were entered upon. Garonne was again disappointing. Cocksure Improves Investors fared well in the Squatters’ Handicap, and an exciting tussle was provided. Valmarch, Second Innings, and Rebel Star were slow to move off, and the first to show out were Cocksure and Ponty,' but at the home turn Silver Sail and Nightcalm were abreast in front of Valmarch (who had made up his ground very fast). Silver Streak. Cocksure, and Ballad. There was not much change into the straight, but- Silver Sail did not last long, and Nightcalm and Silver Streak drew, out, and just when Nightcalm had the-vet-eran settled Cocksure flashed up on the outside -to gain a narrow verdict right on the ' line. Ballad came from well back to be two lengths away next, in front of Silver Sail and Second Innings. Cocksure, who carried 31b overweight, -had to put in a remarkable finishing run to get up. Nightcalm carried the confidence of his connexions. and after warding off Silver Streak was unfortunate in then having to contend with Cocksure’s late but well-timed run. Silver Streak put up a 1 creditable fight in his first race for some months, and there is no doubt about his class. Unfortunately he may not stand up to much racing on hard tracks. Valmarch showed his usual speed during the middle stages, but Second Innings did not recover from His slow beginning. Silver Sail is 3 likely improver.
A Pointless Victory
Privateer had a very easy task in the Orari Trot, and won with a lot in hand. Myrna Loy was the early leader, but gave way to Privateer five furlorigs from hom®. and the latter led into the straight from Oasis, Great Don, and Idlealong. and Cyrano. Privateer came right away in the run home, and_was easing up at the post, while Oasis as easily beat Cyrano, who came again in the straight and got' up to beat Idlealong, with Great Don next- Myrna Loy broke when she surrendered her lead, and fell, and < Master Potts and Eddystone fell over her. A. Leggett, driver of Eddystone, suffered an injury to his ribs. Night Dress Wins ; Night Dress was supported down to a very short price in the Belfield Hack Handicap, place investors especially receiving a small return on their outlay. He was in third place to Great Bramble and Robant early, but when the far turn was reached ,he had drifted to fifth place from Gold Boy. Robant, Master Dingle, and Recollection. He commenced > a forward move turning for home, and followed, Robant and Recollection into the straight. Recollection soon took charge, with Night Dress improving his position, and responding gamely, the favourite gradually worked his way to the front to win going away. Robant stayed on for third, with a B a P to Screamer and Great Bramble.
Night Dress’s supporters' no doubt felt anxious when he lost ground rounding the top, but he quickly made up leeway when called upon, and put some attractive work into his final effort. Recollection put up a gamefight, and has only, to remain as sound as at present to w.in races later. Robant- found the • journey too far. Screamer, after his Ashburton effort, was confidently expected to rriake a bold showing, but failed badly.’ Gold Boy was very slow away, and did well in the circumstances. Gleucos failed to move off, and. took no part in the race.

WESTPORT. September 22.’ Mainly because of the successful race meeting held at Riccarton on July 9, the Westport Jockey Club showed a credit of £438 9s 4d on the year> workings. A. statement to this effect was included in the report presented to the annual- meeting of the club. The actual profit from the meeting was £992 10s 2d, but extra expense was caused by the cancellation of the meeting scheduled to be held at Westport on April 9 and 11, under unusual circumstances. Thp balance-sheet showed an excess of £1764 8s 7d of assets over liabilities, compared with £1325 19s 3d in 1937. Taxes' paid to the Government on the race meeting amounted to £1389 12s. Appreciation was expressed of the assistance given by the Canterbury Jockey Club in allowing the use of its course for the meeting, which helped the - club oiit of a difficult situation. Others who helped, including Mr F. T. H. Bell (secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Cliib), and the Wellington Racing Club, which did not object to the meeting being held on the same day of the conclusion of its winter meeting, were also thanked. The report stated that the membership stood at 118, compared with 123 in 1937. It was said that the race track and grounds were in excellent order, and that the inside - training track should be available after Christmas.

TUKF GOSSIP | Reminder Acceptances for the second day’s programme of' the Geraldine Racing Club will close at noon to-day. Leading Horseman injured Although L. J. .Ellis suffered a serious injury when he was thrown from Royal Refrain after finishing in the second event at Orari yesterday, he was fortunate to escape more' serious consequences, as he was catapulted from the saddle and landed heavily on the top of the three-cornered top rail surrounding the track. Ellis received medical, attention on the spot,.and was removed to the Geraldine Hospital, but was later taken to the Timaru Hospital, where an X-ray examination was made. This revealed that he had suffered a fracture of the skull. Ellis has gone through several seasons of hard riding without any falls, but has suffered two in the last week. He was to have been married next week, but the arrangements will now depend •on how he progresses in the meantime. In Winning Vein A feature of yesterday’s racing at Orari was the success of G. Humphries, who rode three winners and one third place-getter in four mounts. Humphries has for a long time past been a regular and willing attendant on the tracks, and has daily ridden a large amount Of work, so any successes which come his way are well deserved and popularly received. Humphries will continue to act as first horseman for the estate of Sir Charles Clifford, and should enjoy a good season. Chance Spoilt Made Money narrowly escaped having a serious accident shortly after the start of the Geraldine Cup yesterday. Although he did not appear to encounter interference, he struck the fence, and hit a post very hard with one of his hind feet. He was put off his balance, but his rider managed to keep him upright. Made Money, however, was never able to recover, from the severe check and finished well back. A Rider Kicked A. Parsons, rider of Wine Card in the Geraldine Cup, was walking his mount at the starting point, when he was kicked on the leg by Milford, who has usually given trouble in this way at the barrier. Parsons immediately dismounted.-and had to receive treatment for a few minutes before he was able to regain use of his limb. Although the “all-clear” signal was given, the starter. Mr A. J.‘ Hastings, delayed calling the horses in until Parsons was fit enough to remount, and until he received an .assurance that the boy was able to carry on. Parsons was called upon to engage in a hard tussle, and as he had to have medical attention a few minutes after dismounting. it was realised that he displayed distinct gameness in so sticking to his task under a big disadvantage, He was unable to ride again during the afternoon, and may require a few days’ respite.
A Big Difference A London writer says that after a iudge’s verdict had been disputed at Ripon last month, he went into that official’s box to get an idea of the angle. He says he came away convinced that if every racegoer could see the finish from a judge’s box he would never argue again.
Epsom Riders ■ , , In the last 20 years jockeys from Victoria have been on five Epsom Handicap winners. P. Kelly won on Rostrum, W. Duncan on Metellus (dead heat with Boaster)'. H. Jones on Vaals, A. Reed on Cathihar. and K. Voitre on Synagogue. Skidmore, as rider of Nightguard, has a good chance of adding to the number this year. Over the period named. J. Munro has the best record of Sydney jockeys, with three wins and a dead heat—Amounis (2), Silver Ring, and Boaster <4)* S. Cracknell (Claro and Capns) and M MeCarten (Autopay and Gold Rod) are nearest to Munro.

SOUTHLAND NOTES
WAITEMATA. SENT TO CANTERBURY . {THE PRESS Special. Service.! ' INVERCARGILL, September 22. 1 Waitemata was railed yesterday to Christchurch, where she will join up with S. A. Edwards’s team. After winning in her first start at Gore last spring, the Wrack mare followed up this success with two more wins and a second and third in her next four starts. On being required to race against the best of local fields, she did not produce her earlier good form and failed rather badly. She has been spelling since, and as she is assessed on a loose mark she has only to regain her earlier form to improve further. Waitemata was bred and trained by W. Cosgrove, for Mr W. D. McLeod, who also has Eddie- Tolan,' Belle Grattan, Nell Grattan, and Aqua Bond in Edwards’s team., . ; The Gore Trotting Club has decided to write to candidates for the Matabra. seat in, Parliament asking for a state-: ment on their attitude on the granting of. extra permits for trotting. For some time, the Gore Club, along with other Southland clubs, has been endeavouring to secure additional permits for trotting, but with .little success. . Direct Bell 'has been transferred to T. Wallis’s team, which also includes Kid Wolf-'and a two-year-old colt by Arion Axworthy, ranking as a halfbrother to Kid Wolf, direct Bell has proved very solid. in the racing he has done, and the Wellington Direct gelding looks certain to improve on his present mark. Kid Wolf has furnished into a likely type of four-year-old. He is not a big horse but well put together, and, game with it. He is out of the Nelson Bingen mare, June Nelson, a good winner a few seasons back. The Great Bingen mare Plaudit is back in work; but her tasks have been fairly light so far. If breeding counts for anything this mare should be good, as her dam, Winning roint, was by Logan Pointer from the New Zealand Cup winner Winsoon, who left Shine
Soon, All Sunshine, Lynwood, and others. Inadequate Permits It is becoming more evident each year that the number of trotting permits in Southland is inadequate to meet the ever-increasing growth of new owners, and the extension of the breeding of trotting horses, states a passage of the Wyridham Trotting Club’s annual report. During the last few years some of - the best trotting sires' have stood in Southland, and with the great influx of improving young horses to Canterbury and the North Island, the time has "arrived when definite steps should be instituted .to bring pressure to bear on the authorities concerned to increase the trotting permits in Southland, the report adds. Voloma was carrying much more condition than usual when she resumed work after - a spell, but has trimmed up and has pleased in her tasks at Winton. She will have her first outing in the Invercargill Cup, in which she will be required to give away 72 yards. The race will at least assist her in her preparation for the For bury Park spring meeting. ___
