LOCAL TURNOVER INCREASES PRICES SHOW FIRMER TREND Turnover on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday was larger than it has been, and was in a wider range of stocks. Price movements were irregular, but for the most part in favour of sellers. No immediate reaction to the Federal Budget or the European situation was noticeable on the Sydney exchange yesterday beyond a shrinkage in Prices generally were steady. The Melbourne exchange was quiet.

The London stock markets continue to be uneasy. Czech bonds have slumped, the 8 per cents, falling £ls to £52. The year’s highest rate for these bonds was £lO5.

UNLISTED STOCK Sale Reported 100 Ballins Breweries .. 011 0 Local Body and Banking A parcel of Hamilton Borough 4} per cent, debentures, due 1951, changed hands at £lOl 10s. E., S., and A. Bank were firmer, with buyers and business at £5 3s 9d. National Bank of New Zealand advanced to 52s 6d, and more were wanted at 52s 4d. Bank of New Zealand were fractionally weaker at 425. Union Banks had business at £8 7s, and more were wanted at £8 ss. Unsupported sellers of South British Insurance reduced their limits to 44s 3d. Goldsbrough, Morts changed hands at 26s Bd, and there were further sellers at 26s 9d, buyers at 26s 6d. Miscellaneous Buyers of Alloy Steel (New Zealand) raised their bids to 21s, but sellers were reticent. Australian Glass eased to 90s 3d. British Tobacco were firmer on buyers’ offers, 46s 2d. Broken Hill Proprietary showed little variation, with dealings at 55s 9d and 55s Bd. and there were further sellers at the lower price, buyers at 55s 7d. Dunlop Rubber were firm at 20s sd, the market closing Id either way. Electrolytic Zinc, preference, were firmer'at 44s 9d, and 44s Bd, and these were sellers’ and buyers’ closing quotations respectively. G. J. Coles were fractionally firmer at 77s 2d and 775, the market closing 76s lid buyers, 77s Id sellers. ~ . ' Taranaki Oilfields moved up a point to 12s 4d, and there were further buyers at that price, sellers at 12s sd. Woolworths, Ltd., cum dividend, moved up to 20s 3d, closing quotations Id on either side. Mining Gillespie’s Beach were fractionally weaker at 11 id. Maori Gully were firmer, with buyers and dealings at 6d, sellers at 7id. , „ Broken Hill South advanced to 29s lid, but closed with sellers at 29s 9d. Mount Lyella moved up to 27s 2d and 26s lid, sellers staying in at the lower figure, buyers at 26s lOd. North Broken Hill, on the morning call, rose to 465, but on the afternoon call there were sellers at 45s Bd, buyers at 45s 2d. Wellington Alluvials were fractionally firmer at 5s 2d.
