There is apparently one businessman in Dunedin who considers that possession of the Ranfurly Shield adequately compensates Southland for any inconvenience it may suffer in other directions. At the monthly meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday it was mentioned that with the extension next month of the Union Airways services practically every part of New Zealand would be within six hours’ journey of Dunedin. “What about Southland?” came the query. “They have the shield,” firmly remarked a member, and brought the discussion to a close. An unusual phenomenon was seen in Auckland shortly after 5 o’clock on -Tuesday when a mock sun appeared in the western sky. The sun itself was clearly visible and near it could be seen the fainter image of the mock sun. Such phenomena are not common in the Dominion, but are often seen in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, where three and sometimes four images of the sun are seen. The fraternal attitude adopted by many Canadians to other parts' of the Empire was the subject-of comment by Mr J. E. Astley, of Auckland, who returned from a visit to North America by the Niagara. In expressing this attitude the people realised - that they were Canadians and not simply tjuasi-Americahs, .Mr Ashley added. Referring to the United States, he said businessmen and others seemed to be taking a wider view of Mforld affairs thain formerly. - ,
