There were few large calves on offer. Tire sale opened particularly well, last week’s drop on the smaller sorts being fully recovered, and runners, of which there were comparatively few forward, sold particularly well. Prices were as under:— * Heavy runners, £6 11s to £7 18s 6d. Medium runners, £4 8s 6d to £6 8s 6d. Prime vealers, £4 11s to £7 11s. Medium- calves, 36s to £3 11s. Small calves. 10s to 355. STORE CATTLE The entry contained the usual mixed assortment, with only an odd straight coloured line. A pen of six three-year Shorthorn steers made £8 2s 6d, and a pen of yearling Jersey heifers £3 16s 6d. Good cows fit for fattening sold at up to £5 11s,- and the best of a few bulls at £lO 10s. Values generally maintained the . satisfactory levels that have 1 been ruling for some time for forward sorts. DAIRY CATTLE There was an average-sized yarding in the dairy pens of about 75 head. For the small proportion of good sorts there was an improved demand by about 20s a head, but other classes sold at little difference. The showing of dairy culls was fairly heavy, and for these there was a poor demand on account of their lack of store value. Backward Jersey springers sold at about £4 10s. Top price for a Friesian grade cow was £l2 ss, and other reasonably good sorts of cows and heifers ranged about £lO to £ll. FAT PIGS The yarding in the pork section yesterday was of medium size, but about half of the entry comprised plain and unfinished sorts. For the better quality pigs prices were about 2s a head dearer, while other descriptions were 2s to 3s easier. Choppers were yarded in small numbers and met with an excellent sale. Baconers were forward in fair numbers, and the market all round was slightly easier than a week ago, particularly for heavyweights, which were from 3s to 4s a head cheaper. Values were:— Choppers, SBs 6d to £6 Is. Light porkers, 39s 6d to 44s 6d. Medium porkers, 46s 6d to 53s 6d. Heavy porkers, 57s 6d to £3 8s 6d. Average price per lb, 7id to fid. STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was much smaller than that of a week ago. All classes showed an advance of 3s. to 4s a head. Large stores were particularly in .demand. Values were as under:— Small weaners, 15s to 18s; best, 19s to 22s 6d; Slips. 23s to 255. • ' Small stores. 28s to 30s. Medium stores, 32s to SSs. , Large stores, 36s to 40s. BURNSIDE (rasas association, tsleoxan.) DUNEDIN, September 21. The entry of fat cattle at the Burnside stock sale to-day numbered 253 bead, compared with 230 for the previous sale. Some very prime bullocks and heifers were forward. Values were down at the start, but later, with an improved demand, prices rose sharply, and over the last few races cattle were dearer. Extra prime bullocks made to £25 2s 6d, prime £l7 10s to £2l, medium £l3 to £l6 ss, light £8 10s to £l2 17s 6d; extra prime cows and heifers to £ls 12s 6d, prime £l3 7s 6d to £l4-2s 6d, medium £9 2s 6d to £l2 17s 6d, light and unfinished £5 17s 6d to £8 17s 6d. A Jersey cow was, sold for £lO 15s springers made from £5 to £8 ss, and an empty cow made £3 Is. Heifers made from £5 5s to £7 10s. Ewes and lambs brought 6s 3d, and a sow £2 10s.
STORTFORD LODGE
(ITIKSS ASSOCIATION TELEOHAM.)
.... , HASTINGS, September 21. Although there was a fairly large attendance of buyers at the Stortford Lodge sale to-day, the market except for quality lines of fat cattle was very slack. Even In the fat cattle section tlie market behaved very erratically. The market opened quietly, but as the sale progressed a slight improvement was noticed. Towards the end, the market again became sluggish, auctioneers having a hard job to maintain buyers’ interest. The top price for cattle was £l6 7s 6d for an extra prime Polled Angus bullock, which should kill out at more than 10001 b. Buyers appeared to take more Interest in heifers, which sold to £l2 10s, and cows, which sold.to £ll 17s 6d.
In the store cattle section buyers were chiefly interested in suitable chilling lines of steers, yearling steers making to £5 0s and two-year-olds and upwards making to £9 3s 6d. A listless tone was evident in the store sheep section. Hoggets were down in value, and aged ewes were almost unsaleable. Good ewe hoggets reached to 27s 7d, and wether hoggets made to 20s. Ewes with lambs at foot realised up to 15s, and aged ewes to 8s 9d. Fat and forward wethers realised from 13s to 22s lOd.
There was a drop of approximately 2s a head in the fat sheep market. The pennlngs consisted mainly of ewes, but although quality sorts were not lacking, the trouble appeared to be that they were too big. Tops made from 21s to 245. Best lines of fat wethers realised from 25s to 30s. Prime hoggets (Southdown) made to 225, and other types to 26s 6d.
