The annual competition for the Cowllshaw Cup was played at the Shirley links yesterday. Twenty-one teams competed, including two from clubs which had not previously entered for the competition. The course was in splendid order and the weather was good. The cup was. presented for competition 11 vlars ago by 1 the late Miss I. CowliLw one of the earliest members of fhp Christchurch Ladles* Golf Club, who had been four times champion and more than once captain of her Jv^cfub* ♦rt hold the cup was the Hagley ciud, who won in 1927. Since then It has travelled far. It has been held for one vear each by the Hawarden and Amberley Clubs Avondale won it twice, Amur! tied with Kaiapoi in 1930 and won the cud in 1936. • Templeton tied with Kajapoi in 19357 and in addition to two r ties, Kaiapoi won, the cup three times. That the standard of women s golf is improving in Canterbury is shown from the fact that the cup was won last year with a score of 322. and this year the score of the winning team from the Hororata Club was 306. On both days conditions were favourable. Harewood was second, only three strokes behind Hororaxlie following were the best scores: —

The Manuwhiri Cup, given some years ago by the visiting teams for the member of the Christchurch Club with the lowest net score, was won by Mrs Geoffrey Hamilton with a net score of 68, which reduces her handicap from 29 to 25. Other good scores were.' Mrs W. Toomey, 81, 10 • 71; Miss H. Loughnan, 84. 12—72; Mrs G van Asch; 88, 15—73; Mrs A. A. Boon. 93, 19 74. Mrs Toomey and Mrs van Asch each reduced her handicap one stroke. Mrs J; H. Grigg. who won the cup last year, did not play yesterday. To Mrs E. H. Sime (Hororata) goes the honour of being the first to have her name engraved on the Humphrey Cup, which was presented a few : months ago by Mrs E. J. Humphrey for the player with the lowest net score in the Cowlishaw Cup competition. Mrs Sime’s score was 96. 24—72, giving her a tie with Miss Betty Morrow, of Ashburton, whose card read 85, 13—72, Mrs Sime won on the count back. The trophies were presented by Mrs E. S. Vernon, president of the Christchurch Ladies’ Club, who congratulated the winners.

When play in the New South Wales amateur golf championships was resumed to-day, Ferrier beat P. Clapham, 12 and 11.

Other outstanding results were; R. Withycombe beat T. Tanner, 3 and 2: D. beat F. Headlam, 6 and 5; A. Waterson beat L. Carter, 8 and 7. Ferrier got five birdies on the homeward round.
